Another phenomenal Dolphin Day with some cheeky Bottlenose chasing a Cape Fur Seal.
With the whales away, we’ve been spending our days enjoying the company of the dolphins hanging about in the bay. Yesterday, we spotted Common Dolphins on the first tour of the day and Bottlenose Dolphins on the second.
We launched our first tour at 10am and made our way along towards Sopie’s Klip in search of whales, finding none, but spotting some little African Penguins along the way. There was a ton of zoo and phytoplankton in the water today, so we were hoping that with that, we found find some interesting animals, and sure enough, as we were travelling in deep water, we spotted a big disturbance towards Die Plaat.
A Large pod of Common Dolphins were travelling slowly through the bay, seemingly with stomachs full. These dolphins were milling about and were very interested in playing around with the boat, which couldn’t have excited us more! We had the most wonderful time travelling along with them, watching them through the icy blue water below and enjoying them surfacing next to us, jumping occasionally to our delight! There was one particular dolphin who was missing half his dorsal fin who really seemed to like us, being one of the first that we saw and the very last to leave us.
Flashes of gold erupting from the water, there are few sights at sea more glorious than that of the Common Dolphins.
Trip two stated with a sighting of a Sunfish off Danger Point before we moved towards the beach. We had a fantastic African Penguin sighting here with a friendly little raft bobbing at the surface, obliging us as we admired them.
We then caught up with a small pod of Bottlenose Dolphin, who had a couple of seals tagging along with them, we watched the dolphin’s fish and mill together, before one decided he might chase one of the seals. We watched as a few others joined in on the game and were absolutely fascinated by the scene unfolding before us.
