On our latest beach cleanup, we found a deceased pyjama catshark washed up on the rocks. We performed a necropsy in hopes of finding out what happened - and what we found was heartbreaking. A large fishing hook was lodged in its stomach.

This is the harsh reality of what lost or discarded fishing gear can do to marine life. Every year, countless animals suffer from hooks, lines, and other debris left in the ocean.

It’s a reminder that small actions - like disposing of fishing gear properly and picking up trash when we see it - can make a big difference. Let’s do better for our oceans.🌊🦈

We witnessed a spectacular, rare sighting over the Kleinbaai harbour today, when a group of African Penguins suddenly took to the sky! 😱 This has never been seen before and left onlookers speechless. Scientists are currently reevaluating African Penguin anatomy and investigating new conservation strategies to further protect this incredible species! 😎

On Sunday we hosted the lovely Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies who completed their 100km hike from Cape Agulhas Lighthouse to Danger Point Lighthouse! 🥳🏆

The hike takes place over 4 days and each year they raise funds for a different local charity. This year they raised funds for the Huis Lettie Theron retirement and assisted living facility. Very well done to all these ladies and we look forward to hosting you again next year! 😍

Global Recycling Day last week was a massive success! 🥳

Together with Grootbos Foundation and Gansbaai Tourism and GGAP Gorgeous Gansbaai ARTS Project, the school children from Masakhane participated in a cleanup of their neighbourhood, and brought all their rubbish to be recycled at our Recycle Swop Shop! 😎 As a reward for their efforts, the children were able to pick something from the shelves inside our swop shop 🤩

It is through projects like these that children learn the importance of looking after their environment and the planet. Thank you so much to everyone involved! 🥳

Yesterday, we honoured Human Rights Day in South Africa. ✨

A short while ago Gansbaai was hit by some terrible fires, some of which came dangerously close to BARC, the local animal shelter. The staff at BARC made the courageous decision to evacuate the shelter. 🚨

After being alerted of this, White Shark Projects staff jumped in along with other community members to help get the dogs and cats into crates, and ready for transport. Some staff were able to take some dogs home with them to foster while the fire department worked tirelessly to put out the fires. 🔥

A happy ending!! 🥳 The animals were returned safely and some were even permanently adopted by those that fostered them. One such story is of our CEO Jessica Smit and her family, who fostered Sashia during the fires, and adopted her shortly after. 😁

A big thank you to everyone who helped during the evacuation, and to the staff at BARC who take care of these animals on a daily basis and carry them close to their heart ❤️
