♻️🌊 WHERE DOES OUR WASTE GO AFTER WE THROW IT AWAY?

Ever wondered what happens to our waste after it leaves our homes and businesses?

Operations Manager Liz Botha, Tamsin Gray, Senior Reservationist Paul Kotze, and Catering Staff Aphiwe Majambase went behind the scenes at the Gansbaai Recycling Plant to find out where our waste goes after we throw it away — and what we learned was eye-opening! 👀

Every day, the plant receives an average of 1.4 tons of recyclable material. That’s a lot of waste being given a second chance! 🙌

♻️ Plastic 🥫 Cans 📦 Cardboard 🫙 Glass

…and other recyclable materials are sorted, baled, and sent on for further processing.

But anything that can’t be recycled ends up in landfill.

It’s a simple reminder that what we put in our bins matters. When we separate our waste correctly, we help keep valuable materials out of landfill — and help protect the places we love, including our ocean.

During these 21 Days for the Ocean and beyond, let’s make better choices every day:
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Take responsibility.

Because recycling isn't about putting something in the right bin.

It’s about taking responsibility for what we leave behind. ♻️🌊

🌊💙 21 DAYS FOR THE OCEAN | WHALE WALK HERMANUS CLEAN-UP 💙🌊

What an amazing walk and clean-up! 🌿🐋

Not only did we get to take in the breathtaking scenery along the Hermanus Cliff Path, but we also turned our walk into an opportunity to give back to our beautiful surroundings as part of our 21 Days for the Ocean campaign. 🌊

It was wonderful to see people walking through the area notice what we were doing. 👀💚 Hopefully, seeing others taking action will inspire more people to pick up litter when they see it.
And really, shouldn't we be doing this all the time? 🌍

Looking after our beaches, cliffs, paths, oceans and land shouldn't only be something we focus on during a campaign. Every time we go for a walk, enjoy the coastline or spend time outdoors, we can make a small difference by picking up a piece of litter and leaving the area better than we found it.

Because protecting our ocean isn't just a 21-day commitment — it's something we should all be doing every day. 💙🐋

Small actions. Big impact. Let's make caring for our coastline a habit.

🌊 INVESTING IN OUR YOUTH. PROTECTING OUR OCEAN. 💙

As part of 21 Days for the Ocean, the White Shark Projects team visited our local school, Gansbaai Academia, to present an ocean conservation presentation to a full hall of enthusiastic learners! 🌊🙌

Our team explored the incredible marine environment around us and the important role we all play in protecting it.

Learners discovered how plastic and other forms of pollution enter our environment, the devastating impact they have on marine life and our planet, and how the choices we make every day can either harm our ocean or help protect it. ♻️

Because education creates awareness, awareness inspires action, and action creates change.

🌊 21 Days. 21 Actions. 1 Ocean.

✨Follow along as we continue our 21 Days for the Ocean journey and bring more education and action into our local community!

🐋 13 METRES LONG. 🚨 ENDANGERED. 🌍 NO BORDERS.

Meet the whale shark — the world’s largest living fish!

Despite their size, these gentle giants are filter feeders, feeding mainly on plankton and tiny marine life.

🌊 DID YOU KNOW?
They can grow to around 13 metres — about the size of a large bus!
They travel vast distances across oceans and international waters in search of food.

🚨 Whale sharks are classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, facing threats including fishing, bycatch, vessel strikes, pollution and habitat degradation.

Today, International Whale Shark Day reminds us that protecting these incredible animals requires global cooperation.

The ocean has no borders. Our responsibility to protect it shouldn’t either.

Did you know the world’s largest fish is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species?

🦈 SHARKS CAN FLY… AND WE SAW IT AGAIN!

For the second time EVER, White Shark Projects witnessed a shark breach! 🌊🦈
We thought the first one was unforgettable… then it happened again.

A shark launched itself from the ocean with incredible force — sending several hundred kilograms of muscle, teeth and fins into the air before crashing back into the water.

Our guests were there to witness one of the most spectacular behaviours a shark can display, and the excitement was unforgettable! 🤯🌊

But why do sharks breach?
Breaching can be associated with feeding, hunting, courtship, social interactions, or simply vigorous movement. While we may not always know exactly what triggered a particular breach, every sighting gives us another incredible glimpse into the lives of these apex predators.

Bronze Whaler breaches. Countless unforgettable encounters. And who knows what the ocean will show us next? 👀🦈

LANDMARK JUDGMENT: SHELL WILD COAST EXPLORATION BLOCKED

The Constitutional Court has delivered its judgment in the long-running legal battle over Shell and Impact Africa’s proposed seismic exploration along the Wild Coast.

Shell will not be permitted to proceed under the exploration right at the centre of the case.

Why does this matter?
South Africa’s coastlines are home to incredible marine ecosystems, from sharks and whales to dolphins, seals and countless other species. They also support coastal communities, tourism, fishing and livelihoods.

This judgment is an important reminder that our oceans are living ecosystems — not empty spaces to be exploited.

Protecting the Wild Coast means protecting marine life, communities and the future of South Africa’s coastlines. 💙

Protect our oceans. Protect our coastlines. Protect our future.

🌍 “Many small hands make light work.” 💙♻️

This saying perfectly captures the heart of our Recycle Swop Shop.

Today, on International Youth Day, we celebrate young people around the world and recognise the important role they play in shaping our communities and our future. The day also raises awareness of the challenges young people face and highlights the importance of giving them opportunities to have their voices heard, make a difference and reach their full potential.

Our Recycle Swop Shop is one of many ongoing initiatives creating a safe and supportive space for young people. Here, children exchange recyclable items for clothing, educational supplies, toys and games before sharing a warm bowl of soup—all while learning the importance of protecting their environment, supporting their community and creating positive change.

Today, we celebrate their potential, their ideas and their ability to shape a brighter future.

Because change can start with something as small as one young person, one recycled item and one helping hand.
