Tail slaps and tidal adventures!

Yesterday was another busy day on the water with Marine Dynamics as we searched for the Marine Big 5! The spring tide had us launching from Gansbaai Harbour and passing the dramatic Danger Point, setting the scene for a day full of wildlife action.

In deeper waters, we met our seasonal visitors, the Humpback whales, and witnessed something magical: tail slapping! Did you know that when a Humpback whale repeatedly slaps its tail on the water, it might be a way of communicating with other whales, stunning fish, or even getting rid of parasites? It’s also an impressive display of strength, with each slap echoing across the bay!

Around Dyer Island, we found our year-round residents, the Cape fur seals lazing on Geyser Rock, and a few playful splashes in Shark Alley kept the cameras ready. We also caught a glimpse of the critically endangered African Penguins, both on land and in small rafts at sea.

To top it off, a visit to our Shark Cage Diving vessel, Slashfin, delivered sightings of the sleek Bronze Whaler sharks. At the same time, the world’s largest bony fish, the sunfish (Mola mola), made a surprise appearance, adding to an unforgettable day of marine life sightings.

Every trip with Marine Dynamics is a reminder of why protecting these oceans is so important. Come experience the Marine Big 5 with us and witness moments that will leave you in awe!

From Studio Sessions to Ocean Swells – Meet Logan!

Logan may have started his journey in the music world as a passionate session-based player for 20 years, but his creative energy didn’t stop there. Raised in the Eastern Cape and now calling the Western Cape home, Logan’s natural move into videography was only a matter of time.

What began as a hobby 15 years ago quickly evolved into a career. From local shoots to event videography, Logan joined the Marine Dynamics crew in 2023 and instantly found his groove filming the wild wonders of the open sea.
Whether it’s capturing the breathtaking breach of a humpback whale or being hands-on to snag underwater shots of common dolphins, Logan isn’t afraid to get wet, wild, and up close for that perfect frame. His lens brings you closer to the Marine Big 5 than you ever thought possible — and every video tells a story of passion, precision, and love for the ocean.

Did you know African penguins are true romantics… with a hint of wanderlust?

These charismatic seabirds usually stay loyal to the same colony year after year, often even in the same nest — talk about loyalty! But when fish stocks shift or love goes unrequited, some penguins may travel to a new colony in search of food… or a new mate.

While they’re not long-distance migrators, African penguins can still cover hundreds of kilometres along the coast, proving they’re small but mighty ocean travellers!

Every movement tells a story — and we’re here to help protect their next chapter.

From the elusive, endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphins to humpback whales, we have seen it all. Treated with a nice extra, we encountered not one, but 3 different sunfish! Not to forget the incredible Bronze whaler sharks, Cape fur seals and the critically endangered African Penguins!

Once again, thanks to everyone for joining our Marine Big 5 adventures!

Meet Lukas!

Originally from Port St. Johns in the Eastern Cape, Lukas has spent years exploring the wonders of the ocean. He began his marine journey with a shark cage diving operator before joining the Marine Dynamics crew in 2020.

While sharks first sparked his fascination, working with us opened his eyes to the full magic of the marine world.

His dream? To one day be part of the iconic Sardine Run, right off the coast of his hometown.

The Cape Gannet – Beauty, Power, and Precision in Flight

If there’s one bird that captures the wild energy of our coastline, it’s the Cape Gannet – a bold seabird with striking black-and-white plumage, golden crown, and a dive like a missile.

Found only in southern Africa, the Cape Gannet breeds on just six islands. You’ll often see them along the Western Cape coastline, slicing through the sky in flocks or dive-bombing the ocean with breathtaking precision, plunging at speeds over 100 km/h to catch fish!

Sadly, their numbers are declining, mainly due to overfishing, pollution, and disturbance at breeding sites. They are currently listed as Endangered, reminding us how fragile even the most powerful creatures can be.

To witness a Cape Gannet in action is to see evolution perfected – a master of the sky and sea. Make sure to keep an eye out on our next Marine Big 5 trip!
