The King (Giant) Protea 👑

The King Protea (Protea cynaroides) stands tall as the crowning jewel of the fynbos kingdom, proudly holding the title of South Africa’s national flower. Known by many names—Giant Protea, Honeypot, or King Sugar Bush—this remarkable bloom thrives in the southwestern and southern stretches of South Africa’s unique fynbos landscapes.

Its magnificent flower head, the largest in the Protea family, boasts an artichoke-like appearance that inspired its Latin name cynaroides—meaning "like cynara" (the artichoke). But don’t let the name fool you; there’s nothing ordinary about this regal bloom. From soft pink hues to striking variations in color and leaf shape, the King Protea is a true showstopper in nature’s bouquet.

Whether admired in the wild, showcased in a vase with its impressive longevity, or preserved as a striking dried flower, this fynbos giant continues to captivate hearts and celebrate the extraordinary biodiversity of the Overberg region and beyond.

Bad Weather Policy
Safety doesn’t stop on sunny days! If hazardous weather, such as storms, threatens your tour, Funbos E-Bikes will contact you in advance to cancel or reschedule. Your safety is non-negotiable.

Trails Designed for Safe Adventure
We offer four unique routes suited to varying skill levels, with trails that are regularly inspected and maintained for your security. While a moderate level of riding ability is recommended, our guides are always there to provide support and ensure a safe experience for all participants.

Our paths—featuring single and jeep tracks—take you through the diverse vegetation of Lomond. As you ride, your guide will offer not only navigation but also fascinating insights into the natural world, ensuring both a safe and enriching experience.
