📍 Spiritual Treasures of Southeast Turkey

Next on our journey, we had the honour of visiting and paying our respects at the resting place of Safwan bin Muattal (RA), a noble Companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

You might be wondering — how did he end up in this remote part of southeast Turkey?

📖 According to historical sources, Safwan bin Muattal (RA) was sent to this region during the time of the early Islamic expansions under the Rashidun Caliphate, likely during the reign of Caliph ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (RA). He was involved in military expeditions in the Byzantine border regions, and it's believed he was martyred near present-day Samsat (Adıyaman). His maqam (tomb) is revered to this day and remains an important spiritual site for those traveling through Anatolia.

After this, we made our way through a few rural villages, where saints and scholars are buried in quiet, unmarked ziyarets — deeply rooted in local oral tradition and venerated by nearby communities. These are hidden gems, known mostly to those who live in the area or to spiritual seekers passing through.

🕌 The following day, we traveled to Diyarbakır — a city with immense Islamic and cultural heritage. It is said that 27 Sahabah (RA) of the Prophet ﷺ are buried in and around Diyarbakır. These companions likely arrived during the Islamic conquest of the region in the 7th century, either as part of the army or as settlers who carried the message of Islam to new lands. Many were martyred in battle and their graves are scattered throughout the city and nearby towns. Some of the known sites are preserved and marked as ziyarets.

🏰 Right next to these sacred sites stand the ancient Diyarbakır city walls, among the longest and best-preserved fortification systems in the world. They were originally constructed by the Romans, then expanded and reinforced during the Byzantine and Islamic periods. The current form largely dates back to the 5th century CE and includes 82 towers and four main gates, all built using distinctive black basalt stone.

We ended our visit with a stop at the Diyarbakır Museum, which houses artifacts from prehistoric to Islamic periods, giving a fuller picture of the civilizations that shaped this land — from the Assyrians and Romans to the early Muslims and Ottomans.

📸 More photos and reflections coming soon, In Sha Allah.

✨ A Spiritual Journey Through Southeast Turkey ✨

A long read, we know… but if you love history and spirituality, you’ll enjoy this one.

After our group departed for South Africa, we took the opportunity to explore the lesser-known yet spiritually rich southeast region of Turkey — with the intention of offering this unique destination as part of our future travel packages, In Sha Allah.

We arrived in Şanlıurfa in the early hours of the morning and went straight to one of the city’s most sacred historical sites: Balıklıgöl, or the Pool of Sacred Fish. According to Islamic tradition, this is the site where Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) was cast into a fire by King Ni**od (Nemrut) for rejecting idolatry. Allah commanded the fire to be cool and safe, transforming it into water and the burning wood into fish. While it's uncertain whether the fish today descend from that moment, they remain sacred and protected to this day.

We visited the cave believed to be the birthplace of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.), a site deeply revered in Islamic tradition. Nearby lies the Tomb of Maryam (Mary, peace be upon her) — mother of Prophet Isa (Jesus, A.S.) — another place of immense spiritual significance.

Our visit continued to a section of the complex housing sacred relics, including strands from the Blessed Beard of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his footprint, and a historic Kiswah (covering of the Ka'bah) from many decades ago. These relics were brought to Turkey during the Ottoman Empire for safekeeping and preservation.

We were also honored to visit the resting place of Shaykh Ali al-Shadhili q.s, a spiritual luminary of the Shadhili Sufi order from Tunisia, whose influence and presence in Urfa is still deeply felt. Close by is the seclusion room of Sayyid Kadir, a respected local saint known for his spiritual devotion — not his burial site, but a preserved space where he would enter khalwa (spiritual retreat).

The compound is extensive and features beautiful architecture, mosaics, and a lively bazaar where one can experience the local culture and crafts.

From there, we journeyed to the peaceful town of Halfeti, known for its partially submerged old city and a serene boat cruise along the Euphrates River, with scenic mountain views and glimpses of history peeking through the landscape.

📸 Swipe through for a glimpse into this sacred and inspiring journey.
