Roosterkoek for Breakfast?
-A Local Food Review
Marshmallow Garden Cafe – George, Garden Route
If you find yourself travelling between George and Mosselbaai, do yourself a favour and take the back road less travelled. A mere 5km outside of George travelling towards the airport you’ll find a restaurant that I can only describe as being more homely than your favorite couch. It’s far enough to tell your significant other that you’re going out of town for a meal, but still close enough that your petrol tank doesn’t take a beating.
They’ve battled to find a spot after their lease expired at their previous venue, but we love to call their new home: Mashmallow 2.0. You can find all the regular criminals (criminals of the waistline that is) on the menu, including what has been dubbed: “The Best Milkshakes in Town”. Not to mention that the new playground was a massive upgrade, so feel free to bring the kids and best of all, your four-legged friends.
Whenever I visit them, I tend to order off-menu, whether it be mixing milkshake flavours or making unconventional floats. So, it came as no surprise that I wanted the breakfast special, but on a roosterkoek and JOH was I impressed! NOTE: They only make their roosterkoeke fresh on Saturdays and Sundays so grab one before they’re sold out.
My only complaint was that it had too much filling for me to hold it in my hands and devoir it like the 120kg South African Amateur Grazer that I am. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great complaint to have as I would happily chomp down on a bowl of only that filling with a smile on my bakkies.
Here’s the low down.. You’ve got thin cut bacon with fresh cherry tomatoes on a bed of lettuce. However, the star of the show is without a doubt the scrambled eggs. Whoever cooked up that batch of eggs has some sorcery about them that turns eggs into golden plumps of eggy heaven.
I made the first cut with surgical precision as to not completely ruin this masterpiece of a meal, but as soon as the first forkful entered my mouth hole, it awoke something primal inside of me that had me begging for more.
Only when I got to the third bite did I realize that there is a creaminess coming from somewhere and, although creamy, it’s not the eggs. I must find the culprit! Finally, after expertly dissecting the sandwich I found the one who was responsible for the creamy delight that my taste buds were experiencing. On the inside of the roosterkoek was the most perfect amount of the creamiest mayo that I’ve ever tasted and it made the whole meal come together.
No matter what you try, it will always be a winner, because there’s always heaps of love in the food and that makes all the difference. So make your way to this hidden gem of a restaurant any day of the week till 5 or 3 over the weekends. I for one will soon be back for more!
