Nestling at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains, George finds itself at the center of natures “Garden Route” in the Cape Wildflower Floral Kingdom. Situated approximately 430 ks from the Mother City of Cape Town,

George is widely regarded as the hub of the Southern Cape Region. It is therefore the ideal base from which to explore the Southern Cape and Little Karoo. A good road network and the Geo

rge airport link the Southern Cape and Little Karoo hinterland to the major center of South Africa. It is the business hub of the region and offers a variety of conference facilities, restaurants and tourist attractions and activities.

15 ks east of George on the N2 between the Kaaimans River and the Goukamma Nature Reserve, you will discover Wilderness. Nestling between the wooded foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains and the warm Indian Ocean in a region renown for its incomparable natural beauty, vast stretches of beaches and tranquility. It is a haven for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Most people chance upon Wilderness for the first time after sweeping through the Kaaimans River gorge and rounding Dolphin Point. Below stretches a seemingly endless beach; in the distance are hints of inland lakes, rare in South Africa; to the left wooded hills tumble down to the village and further inland are faraway glimpses of the Outeniqua Mountains. Climate George’s mild Mediterranean type climate makes it possible to participate in outdoor activities throughout the year. Summer temperatures average 26˚C and winter temperatures average 14˚C in the daytime.

Step back in time and explore the fascinating history of the Congregational Mission Church in Pacaltsdorp, George — completed way back in 1825! Built by talented local hands starting in 1822, this beautiful church may have been inspired by the well-known missionary Carl August Pacalt. Its solid stone tower echoes the charm of traditional English country churches, while the stunning Gothic Revival windows steal the show with their elegant wooden arches and intricate patterns. A true architectural gem, this church is one of South Africa’s best-preserved Gothic Revival treasures — and a proud piece of George’s colourful past!

For history lovers, George offers two must-visit museums: the George Museum and the Outeniqua Transport Museum.

The George Museum focuses on the history of the town, displaying a wide range of fascinating objects from fossils to photographs and furniture. Dedicated volunteers painstakingly research and catalogue items in the collections. There are also regular exhibitions about aspects of George's rich cultural history.
Best of all it is absolutely free! Enjoy easy access via Caledon Street and safe parking at the back of the museum at the George library.
