Carved through rugged mountain valleys, ancient forests and sweeping river ravines, the Prince Alfred Pass remains one of the most magnificent historic journeys connecting Uniondale to Knysna.

Master road builder Thomas Bain began constructing this epic pass in 1860 to forge an access route between the interior Langkloof and the coast.

Over 160 years later, the remarkable drystone retaining walls built by convict labourers still support the twisting gravel road. It was right at ‘Tiekeliefie’ ridge where those very labourers were finally granted their ‘ticket of leave’ in 1867.

Today, traveling the pass feels like stepping back in time.
