SA's new mandatory traveller declaration system
* The South African Revenue Service (SARS) introduced a pre-arrival, digital declaration platform applicable to all travellers exiting or entering a South African border post as from 01 July 2026.
* The new system requires a digital declaration to be completed by each passenger within 24 hours of their arrival at the border post.
* A parent or legal guardian needs to complete a declaration on behalf of a child or infant.
* All travellers entering or departing South Africa are required to declare goods, including currency, in accordance with Section 15 of the Customs and Excise Act. Only goods, currency or other items that exceed a traveller's allowance need to be declared.
