Announcing - We are committed to keeping you inspired from home during these tough times.

It is our mission to make art & culture more broadly available, and as part of that mission we will be bringing the best jof Norval Foundation right to your screen. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing live art stories in 60 seconds with – every day we will be posting an image of an art piece from the Homestead Collection, or what is currently on display, with a voiceover by our own or invited curators, artists or colleagues who discuss the work, or offer an insight that we might miss when we see a work on display. Think of it as an art museum tour from your phone!

Remember to stay tuned and turn your volume up when you see our posts.

While most of us visit art museums to see art (duh, right?), others, like France-based photographer Stefan Draschan, are there to create their own pieces. And Stefan does it by camping in galleries for days, waiting for visitors who perfectly match the artworks they observe.

"We’re moving towards a time where we want a contemporary art world to be more inclusive. I don’t think there’s a way back from this, it’s now and it’s a reality.”

And here it is...the 2019 Sanlam Portrait Award winning work - "Lesala in Silhouette" (Oil on Italian Cotton) by Craig Cameron-Mackintosh. Congratulations!

Ultimately, lucidity and the acute awareness of lighting reigned supreme this year. Drawing from his background in cinematography, Cameron-Mackintosh showcased great sensitivity and a remarkable understanding of lighting in the creation of 'Lesala in Silhouette'.

Read more about the winning work and the 2019 Sanlam Portrait Award in the September issue of the SA Art Times Magazine.

The other amazing Top 40 works - and each of the Top 5 Finalist pieces will be uploaded to our FB Page soon.

60 more of the Top 100 portraits will be on show at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town - the exhibition opens Saturday 24 August at 11 am.
