Background & Overview

Formation: Carved by the Blyde River, a tributary of the Olifants River, over millions of years through erosion, river activity, and tectonic uplift.
Size: 26 km long and up to 800 meters deep – the third-largest canyon in the world and the largest “green” canyon due to its lush subtropical vegetation.
Name Origin: “Blyde” means “happy/joyful” in Dutch. Named by 19th-century Voortrekkers after a successful journey, contrasting with the nearby Treur (“sad”) River.
