The African Fish Eagle, with its distinctive call and majestic presence, is a symbol of Africa's waterways. It is one of the iconic bird of prey in Kruger National Park.

The Fish Eagle has specialised talons with spiricules that help it to grasp slippery aquatic prey. The Fish eagle can catch and grasp fish up to ten times its body weight. If need be the Fish Eagle will drag its prey to the shoreline without taking off again from the water. It is a very determined bird.

From its perch at the top of trees, the eagle can dive at speeds of 200 – 322 km/h to catch its prey by its talons.

These birds build nests that may stretch to lengths of up to two meters. During the dry seasons, the African fish eagle couples return to the nests they used before and mate for life.

The wingspan varies depends on the s*x and can reach 2.4 metres.

They are usually seen in pairs, thought to mate for life, the female can be told apart from the male as she is the larger and has a larger white breast patch. Their breeding season occurs during the drier months

As a top predator along waterways, the African Fish Eagle helps regulate fish populations, contributing to the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. Its presence is an indicator of the water's vitality and the abundance of fish stocks.

Today’s Safari Adventure at Elephant Plains Game Lodge

Our sunset safari began with an unforgettable sighting of a rhino marking its territory, a powerful reminder of the wild’s raw and instinctive beauty.

Shortly after, we experienced an adrenaline-pumping close encounter with an elephant, its sheer size and presence leaving us in awe.

As we journeyed further, we came across a small herd of buffaloes, grazing peacefully against the golden hues of the setting sun.

The excitement didn’t stop there. We stumbled upon the Nkuhuma lion pride, lounging and relaxed, epitomizing the effortless grace of Africa’s apex predators.

As the sky transitioned to twilight, we were treated to a breathtaking sight: Tiana, the iconic female leopard, with her freshly caught duiker kill. Watching her in her element was the perfect way to close our safari.

With hearts full of wonder, we made our way back to the lodge, grateful for the magic of the African wilderness. Every moment today was a testament to the beauty of nature.

The Tortoise Pan Male and His Reluctant Encounter

In the heart of Sabi Sands, the Tortoise Pan male leopard, known for his striking rosette coat and territorial dominance, was recently observed in an intriguing encounter. Sharing his space with a female leopard, the scene quickly shifted from companionship to conflict.

The female leopard, seemingly in a flirtatious mood, approached the Tortoise Pan male with unmistakable intent—her body language soft and inviting, a purr escaping her throat as she circled him. However, the male leopard, true to his reputation for being aloof and solitary, displayed none of the receptiveness she sought. Instead, his demeanor turned cold and aggressive.

With ears pinned back and a low, menacing growl reverberating through the air, he made his displeasure known. His tail flicked sharply, and his muscles tensed as he warned her to maintain her distance. Despite her persistence, the Tortoise Pan male stood his ground, asserting his dominance and preference for solitude.

This dramatic encounter, while a testament to the unpredictable dynamics of leopard behavior, also underscores the unique personality of the Tortoise Pan male—a formidable predator with a clear boundary for when and how his space is shared.

Witnessing this rare moment of tension was a reminder of the complex social behaviors that make leopards one of Africa’s most captivating creatures.

Wild dogs on the road on our morning safari in the Kruger National Park.

Wild dogs have a seventy percent hunting success rate in comparison to Lions who only have a thirty percent success rate. Lead by an Alpha Male and female, they base their strategy on team work, which enables them to be highly efficient hunters.

Also known as the painted dog, each wild dog has its own unique pattern, similar to a human being where each individual has their own unique thumb print.

The wild dog denning period coincides with the impala rut.
