“The booking process was really easy and the tour was extremely fun, well pitched, engaging for us and our two kids 14 and 17. We chose land based as we have sea sickness in our party and were able to enjoy a variety of view points and understand more about the whales that travel in and out of hermanus. It was a great way to experience the whales of the area and we are deeply grateful for Dave’s open hearted nature and wisdom. He’s also a very talented photographer! The restaurant next door to his shop was also excellent for food after!”

A family from Milan, eager to see Southern Right Whales & why they visit beautiful Walker Bay.

SRW’s spotted in the Bay, and through the binoculars they clearly saw the callosities that make each SRW unique, like a human finger print, their identification are their callosities.

If you’re visiting Hermanus & you’d like to learn more about the Whales, join me on a land-based tour.

Our tour ended today with Mother SRW breaching at least 10 times for her young calf.

“The Journey begins….”

Why do Southern Right Whales return to Hermanus every winter?

It’s one of the questions Dave is asked on almost every tour.

The answer isn’t as simple as “they come to have their calves”. There’s an extraordinary story behind why choose these waters, what makes Walker Bay so special, and how they’ve been returning for here for generations.

Every tour begins at the Whale Museum, where Dave sets the scene before heading out along the spectacular coastline to various vantage points. It’s here that the story begins - connecting the whales, the ocean, Hermanus and the remarkable journey these gentle giants undertake each year.

Whale Season is upon us 🐳🐳
It’s always a privilege for Dave to share his knowledge, experience and stories with travellers to Hermanus eager to know about the Whales that visit our shores annually.

We’ve kicked off the 2026 Season with a group of Medical Professionals from across Africa attending a symposium in the Overberg.

For many, a 2nd trip to South Africa, but for most, their first experience of Hermanus, and definitely not their last!

After a brief introductory chat at The Windsor Hotel Dave moved the group along the Cliff path, heading to the Whale Museum.

20 years of observing and photographing the Whales ensures Dave has plenty of interesting facts to share before they returned to their Hotel for lunch & hopefully plans to return soon
