𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐅𝐲𝐧𝐛𝐨𝐬 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, and today we introduce you to the 𝐊𝐥𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝, 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚
𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬. Classified as ‘𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝’ by the The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

We often see this species growing in the greater 𝐊𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞, which includes the residential buffer zone towns of Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay, and
Rooiels, as well as the agricultural buffer zone of Grabouw. It flowers in April (autumn in the Southern Hermisphere), and October (peak springtime). In recent years, the genus
Serruria has successfully been propagated and sold as flowering pot plants. This enables people living in the Kogelberg Biosphere buffer zones to transplant these vulnerable plants to their already ideal sandstone-rich yards, so the plant and it’s companion species can continue thriving.
The Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, where we end one of our days of hiking on our𝐊𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐨, has a tremendous wealth of expertise, books, plants, and other
resources to help locals establish thriving indigenous and species-supportive gardens.
