FERNKLOOF NATURE RESERVE GATE CLOSES AT 19:00 DURING SUMMER

Visitors and hikers using the Fernkloof Nature Reserve are reminded of the operating hours.

• During spring and summer, from 1 September to 30 April, the reserve will be open from 06:00 to 19:00.
• From 1 May to 31 August, the reserve will be open from 07:00 to 18:00.

Hikers should plan their walks so that they can leave the reserve before closing time, as the main gate will not open automatically for people to exit.

The only exceptions are for those with a valid booking at Galpin Hut, whose vehicles can remain in the reserve, or if there is a pre-arranged agreement with Hermanus Botanical Society for a meeting or function at the hall or botanical gardens.

In case of an emergency or if you are unable to exit the reserve after closing time, please contact the Overstrand Municipality 24/7 Client Contact Centre for basic services at 028 313 8111. A ranger will be dispatched to open the gate, take your details, and explain the reasons for the no-entry policy after hours without a valid booking at Galpin Hut or prior arrangement with the Hermanus Botanical Society. Once the Protected Area Management Plan (PAMP) is approved, a by-law will be finalised to impose fines on individuals found in the reserve after closing time without proper authorisation.

7 April 2024 @ 09:30 Overstrand disaster teams on high alert

Overstrand Municipality is on high alert as the Western Cape braces itself for predicted heavy rains and near gale force winds.

The Overstrand Disaster Management and supporting teams are “prepared and ready” as it is likely that the expected rainfall and high winds will cause localised flooding and damages across the Overberg District.

• Avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges.
• Motorists should be cautious and avoid driving through flooded areas.
• Do not walk, swim, or drive in swift-flowing water.
• Secure any patio / outside furniture from strong winds.

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre will meet at 11:00 today to update the regional centres. The municipal manager of ODM will then meet with all MM's at 13:00. A further update will be provided then.

Contact numbers you might need for the various emergency services:

• 028 313 8111 for emergencies relating to municipal infrastructure
• 028 312 2400 in case of a fire, flood or medical emergency
