Kloof and Highway SPCA
The Kloof and Highway SPCA maintains a strict adoption process to ensure consistency, accountability, and that the animal’s best interests always come first. While some may view this as “too much” or ask, “all this for a dog?” the answer is yes. For a dog, a cat, a bunny, even a rat. Every life matters.
We are seeing a growing number of dogs admitted after being homed by so-called “reputable” organisations.
In most cases, the fault lies not with the family or the animal, but with irresponsible homing practices. We have encountered animals placed without home inspections, without proper socialisation with existing pets, and without being vaccinated or sterilised.
The consequences are serious. Dogs are placed into incompatible homes, resulting in fighting, injury, and at times, loss of life. Animals with undisclosed behavioural issues are rehomed without transparency, leaving families unprepared. When problems arise, these families are often told the animal cannot be returned.
This is unacceptable and dangerous. Responsibility does not end once an animal is placed.
Irresponsible homing leads to animals being passed from home to home, neglected, or left to suffer. While the SPCA will never turn an animal in need away, it is unfair for organisations to offload the consequences of poor practices onto others.
If a shelter does not physically inspect your home, facilitate proper introductions, and ensure animals are vaccinated and sterilised before homing, this reflects a clear lack of responsibility. As an adopter, you have the right to ask questions, demand transparency, and expect a thorough process.
Responsible homing is not optional. Lives depend on it.
