In 1782, a British East Indiaman named the Grosvenor struck the wild and jagged coastline of what is now South Africa’s Eastern Cape. What followed was not just a tale of shipwreck, but a haunting odyssey across one of the most treacherous—and politically volatile—regions in the world.
Over a hundred survivors stepped ashore that morning. Most would never be seen again.
This is a story of betrayal and bravery, of desperation and endurance. It’s a story of colonial frontiers and clashing cultures, of women and children abandoned, of diamonds lost and found. Of a young Anglo-Indian boy whose suffering moved a nation—and of men who vanished into the wilderness, never to return.

Last week - one of our Pondoland hiking group had the privilege of meeting David Samuels (55). David is residing in Cutwini in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. David was an avid runner and paramedic until he lost his leg in 2008 in a car accident. But that didn’t stop him! His love for running motivated him to start training again and in 2011, he went back to the Comrades but this time as an amputee. He ran the race on his walking foot and unfortunately could not finish due to swelling and pain. A fellow runner saw his determination and introduced him to Dr Roland Toogood in Port Elizabeth who fitted him with a running blade. Just a few short years later, he crossed the finish line in 10 hours and eventually went on to run Comrades in 8 hours 10 minutes.

David trains in the mountains and on the beautiful beaches in Lusikisiki in the Transkei which has worn down his blade and stump sock and still he is determined to run his 19th Comrades Marathon this year in 8 hours!

They have created a Back-a-Buddy campaign with the funds raised - to go towards:
- a new blade,
- a new stump liner/sock
- transport and accommodation at the Comrades

They spent 5 days with David and his smile and stories truly inspired us. No complaints, just a love for running and for his rural community.
