🎣🍃 The Fisherman's Cottage - Route 5 - Mooi River 🍃🎣

Tucked away in the Midlands, The Fisherman’s Cottage is a luxurious family- and pet-friendly lakeside retreat. Escape the busy world and soak in the serenity of a 7ha trout dam – one of the best, in our opinion. Paddle across the water, spot vibrant birdlife, or enjoy a family picnic by the waterfall before a refreshing swim in a rock pool. Our favourite spot? The hill next to the cottage, where sundowners come with breathtaking mountain views. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the rare bald ibis or hear the beautiful call of a fish eagle.

Route 5: Mooi River | Rosetta | Kamberg

A Midlands Meander experience wouldn’t be complete without a visit to The Wine Cellar —a family-run business that prides itself on personal, knowledgeable service. In-store, you’ll find a wide range of liqueurs, whiskies, brandies, ci**rs, and coffee beans (which they’ll grind for you). They take the task of finding wine treasures for you seriously.

Next, visit Hartford House —Home of Good Conversation, Fine Wine, and Classic Horses. You can feel the passion at Hartford; every meal reflects their deep love for what they do.

Finally, wind down at Mooi River Country Club . Play a round of golf or relax at their bar, breathe in the fresh country air, and soak in the beautiful surroundings.

Route 4: Lion’s River | Lidgetton | Balgowan | Nottingham Road
Here’s a list of places to grab a drink or enjoy a foodie experience on Route 4 of the Midlands Meander:

Start off at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site . The Visitor Centre is complemented by the ‘Long Walk to Freedom’—a moving experience where guests can follow the timeline of Mandela’s life through a beautifully landscaped garden. The on-site coffee shop serves a variety of meals, including burgers, toasted sandwiches, and a great selection of hot and cold drinks.

Piggly Wiggly Country Village is a well-known gem on the Meander, offering a selection of diverse eateries: pizza place, coffee shop, Chocolate Heaven, and Wedgewood (don’t miss their ice cream!)—to name just a few.

Highgate Wine Estate is a sophisticated retreat where you can enjoy thoughtfully prepared meals, cocktails, and, of course, exquisite wine.

Caversham Mill Resturant is in the heart of the Midlands, set on the banks of the beautiful Lion’s River. It’s well-known for excellent service, delicious meals, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Millage Cottage is home to a quaint German bistro—a must-see! Enjoy beer on tap, explore their gorgeous gardens, or have some fun with a round of putt-putt.

Rawdons Restaurant offers traditional, hearty meals and a must-visit pub. It’s also home to the iconic Nottingham Road Brewing Company—a thriving independent brewery that’s been delighting locals and visitors with its range of naturally brewed ales and lagers.

Route 3 may have a shorter list of foodie finds, but these gems really pack a punch! Start off at Taste Buds Farm Stall for a true farm shopping experience. They offer a wide variety of home-baked foods and handmade décor that supports their local community. Enjoy a delicious meal, sip on a sundowner, and let the kids play.

Hebron Haven Hotel is another local favourite, featuring an inviting bar area, river access for swimming and scenic walks, a trampoline, tennis court, pool, and often live music—perfect for a laid-back day out.

Mount Park Guest Farm is a destination you won’t want to miss. Their Bull and Spier Restaurant sits at the base of the majestic iNhlosane mountain—ideal for hiking, horse riding, or fishing in one of their peaceful, picturesque dams. Order lunch and enjoy it surrounded by nature.

Starting out on the Curry’s Post Road, you’ll find Terbodore Coffee Roasters —a top-class spot for coffee, breakfast, and lunch! Tasting experiences and tours are available by appointment, and their products are available to purchase on-site every day.

Next up is DE TIAMO Design & Retail. While you shop, enjoy a coffee or light bite—or gather your friends for a few rounds on their Pickleball court!

From there, Crossways Hilton is a much-loved classic in the quaint town of Hilton. Enjoy a friendly, laid-back vibe, delicious pub grub, and a welcoming bar.

Sagewood Cafe, at the Avenues Centre, is your go-to for a health-conscious menu that doesn’t skimp on flavour. Cold-pressed juices, kombuchas, breakfasts, brunches, lunches, and hand-crafted baked goodies—open 7 days a week.
