🧺 Handcrafted with skill, creativity, and determination.

Meet Siyaphambili Disabled Basket Weavers, one of the Midlands Meander’s Emerging Artist projects. Since 1999, this talented co-operative has been creating beautiful handwoven baskets, lampshades, baby cribs, home décor, and more, transforming traditional weaving skills into sustainable livelihoods.

Each piece is handmade and tells a story of resilience, empowerment, and craftsmanship. By supporting these artisans, you’re helping to preserve local skills and support families within our Midlands communities.

Their work can be viewed and purchased at the Woza Woza Mpofana Tourism Centre in Mooi River.

A bit of information on one of the Midlands Meander Association's Founding Members, Andy and Helen Shuttleworth.

Today, Shuttleworth Weaving is proudly run by the next generation, Rob and Julia Shuttleworth, who continue to produce one-of-a-kind handwoven rugs, throws and textiles from their workshop deep in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Their commitment to quality, traditional weaving techniques and thoughtful design ensures that every piece reflects the family's rich heritage while carrying it forward into a new era.

Shuttleworth Weaving started in the 1980s.

Andy Shuttleworth remembers, "we got the hell in with formal employment. I was especially tired of wearing a safari suit. We decided to buy somewhere to live that was far enough away from town that we couldn’t commute”. That’s how they landed up in Fort Nottingham living in a caravan beneath the forest and earning their isiZulu name ‘amathendweni’- the tent people.

Helen and Andy quickly earned a reputation for exceptional quality handwoven cushions and carpets, never wavering from their intention to create original craft from the best materials available. Today, internationally renowned Shuttleworth Weaving epitomises the spirit of true craftmanship, voluntary simplicity, authenticity and ethical living.

Do you remember visiting Andy and Helen back in the days when this photo was taken?
