“⏳ Sands of Time…”

Alexander gave us something truly special during his recent FGASA Level 1 (NQF 2) assessment. Starting with sand falling through his fingers, he used a 24-hour timeline of Earth’s history to interpret the incredible Maputuland Sand Forest biome around us. 🌍

From an aardvark dig to geology, soil formation, plants and ecology, he linked everything together in a unique and engaging way far beyond this level.

As an assessor, I was genuinely blown away by his creativity and interpretation skills. A future FGASA Level 3 Professional Guide in the making. 👏🌿

Big bore experience today 💥🐘

Student Bradley had the opportunity to shoot my Rigby .416
Despite the extra recoil, Bradley handled the rifle very well. Good fundamentals, solid shooting form, safe rifle handling, and good shot placement throughout the exercise 👏🔫

We also used the session to cycle out my older .416 carry rounds before replacing them with fresh ammunition. Carry ammo takes a beating from daily bush carry, heat, dust, moisture, and constant movement, so it’s always good practice to shoot out older rounds and replace them with fresh reliable ammunition.

Nothing beats real experience behind a big bore rifle 💪🔥

🐜 🍄 Nature, in its most fascinating (and slightly eerie) form…

A couple of slides of what we practically learn on morning walks - let’s elaborate on the first couple of slides;

🐜 These ants we found perched at the very top of grass tufts aren’t there by choice. They’ve been infected by a fungus known as Cordyceps.

Once inside the ant’s body, the fungus begins to take control—altering its behaviour and forcing it to climb vegetation and clamp down in an exposed position. This is the perfect environment for the fungus to grow and eventually release spores, spreading the infection to more unsuspecting ants below.

A remarkable example of nature’s complexity… and a reminder that even the smallest interactions in the bush tell powerful stories. Thanks to second-year students for breaking down one of the wild’s most incredible survival strategies to us on a guided morning walk!

Impalas have specialised lower front teeth that work almost like a natural comb. Especially see slide 3 🌱

These teeth help them groom themselves by removing ticks, loose hair, and dirt from their coats — an important part of staying healthy in the wild.

They also use grooming as a social behaviour known as allogrooming, where impalas groom one another. This helps strengthen social bonds within the herd while assisting with parasite control in areas they can’t easily reach themselves.

In the bush, even small behaviours play an important role in survival. 🌿

‘You cannot leave Africa, Africa said. It is always with you - there inside your head. Our rivers run in currents in the swirl of
your thumbprints; our drumbeats counting out your pulse; our coastline the silhouette of your soul. ‘
