Cheetahs are the smallest „big cats“ in Kruger - only wild cats are smaller and therefore they are fairly low down on the bottom of the predator hierarchy. They are often threatened by lions and hyenas or even the more elusive leopards, who may steal their prey. These male cheetahs have joined together to form a coalition, which is the most common social grouping among males - they seldom stay alone while females are usually solitary. They are commonly brothers and the purpose of this coalition is to increase the success rate of hunts, have better protection and improve chances of mating as one may get lucky in passing on the shared genes even though the brother doesn’t.

Bateleur Eagles or Short Tailed Eagles are true eagles with very striking plumage of different colors, and are thus easily seen in Kruger National Park. The plumage of the juveniles differs greatly from that of the adult birds, and can therefore be tricky to identify correctly. They also have a varied diet, hunt but also eat carrion and can even take down rather large prey. We love to see them in the park due to their plumage and were so thrilled to take this shot of a Bateleur taking flight. 🇿🇦

Hyenas and Wild Dogs are eternal enemies as they are competing for feeding opportunities. Most of the time hyenas are following the wild dogs waiting for them to make a kill, as they are very successful hunters. When the wild dogs are done eating, the hyena will take the remaining bones. However, the wild dogs prefer hyenas to stay far away from them. This group of wild dogs and a couple of hyenas had a very interesting interaction at the dam, where hippos also were present coincidentally. We love to see interactions between animals of the same or of different species, because there is so much to learn and interpret about their behaviour.

This beautiful male leopard was resting in the dry river bed to find a cool spot in the heat of the day. How lucky for our guests to be treated to this sighting! The majestic leopard is a solitary animal and males and females only pair up to mate. It competes with various other predators in Kruger; notably the lion who is far bigger in size, and the hyena who can also steal its prey. Therefore, leopards and their kill can often be found on trees where they are relatively safe.

This adorable hyena cub is sitting on his mother's back as we take their picture. The spotted hyenas are Africa's larges carnivore, and the most successful as they are very flexible in their hunting habits, type of prey and group size for hunting. They are also able to make use of all parts of an animal and are mostly scavengers too. The mothers only take care of their own cubs, not of each others; and their societal structure is matriarchal. Although feared and even despised by some humans, they have an important role to play in their environment.

Rhinos are endangered in Kruger National Park (and in virtually all other areas of Africa and the world…). They are victims of poaching for their horns. These white rhino’s horns have been removed to make them less of a target for poachers, although the horns do grow back. The other species of rhinos present in the park (and even rarer) are black rhinos, which are smaller and are mainly browsers (eating leaves), therefore also called “hook lipped rhino” due to the shape of its mouth. The white rhino’s is a browser (eating grass) and referred to as the square lipped rhino.

A herd of zebras is seen grazing on an overcast day at the end of summer. The plains zebra found in Kruger live in harems consisting of one dominant stallion and several adult females and their foals. Other zebra species have different social behaviours. Here the male is looking out for predators to keep the others safe. The zebra is seen in Kruger relatively frequently but classed as near threatened. With their distinctive stripes and interesting behaviour they are a favourite sighting for many of our guests.

Beautiful lionesses on the move.

These lionesses are part of a „mega pride“ that in its day used to comprise of more than 35 individuals. One of the lionesses can be seen to wear a tracking collar to record its movements around the park for scientific purposes. Knowing how many lions are in each area is key to the conservation effort. However, in order to correctly estimate the size of the lion population in Kruger and other areas, scientists have to take pictures of each individual and identify them by looking at their whisker spot pattern. Lions face threats due to loss of habitat and other factors.

A pack of wild dogs is on the hunt, looking for prey and being alert. We love to see these animals in Kruger, as they are what constitutes a „special sighting“ and they are also very interesting to observe and talk about. They are an endangered species with a distinctive coat pattern, that varies by individual. They are especially adapted to hunt their prey as a pack at high speed. They are very social animals, with less hierarchically structures than for example wolves, but still only the dominant female will have pups as it would be impossible for the pack to sustain and hunt for more than one litter of pups at a time.

Perfect spotting of this leopard on a tree by our guide! The female leopard has chosen this tree as a vantage point to have a better view of the surrounding area and over the bushes. This helps her to look for prey. Leopards also use trees to seek safety from other predators to rest or to eat their own prey. The trained eye of a professional nature guide knows exactly where to look; and could see the remains of an impala carcass up on a branch and know that the leopard is still nearby and will come back eventually to eat again. This is one of the ways in which a nature guide will add to the safari experience of a visitor to Kruger National Park.

Baboons are always a nice sighting in the park. The Chacma Baboon is the species we can find in Kruger Park and in most parts of Southern Africa. They are also part of our logo, with Khalanga being the name of the clan that identifies with the attributes of this animal.

Baboons are social animals and can be seen grooming each other as a way of forming and maintaining social connections and hierarchies. They often travel in very large troupes, consisting of males, females and young ones. They are hunted by predators such as leopards and sleep on trees in order to protect themselves from being eaten. Even though leopards can climb trees too, they would not be able to approach without being noticed by one of the sentinels/ guards on duty!

There is so much to see at the dam!

On a typical safari day, your guide will take you to various places in the park that are promising for animal sightings: this can include places where certain animals are common (a hyena dam) or have just been spotted and are likely around (a fresh kill). One of the top places to see animals is a dam, water hole or or any body of water where animals typically stay (hippos, crocs and birds) or come to drink.

Here we can see a variety of birds: k**b billed duck, African Fish Eagle, Black Stork and Yellow Billed Stork) and a large herd of impala, some hippos in the water and also buffaloes drinking. The tree in the middle of the water is home to a colony of red billed buffalo weavers, that have built a large communal nest there. This can protect them from committing enemies like snakes who will have trouble getting across over the water.
