Winter is one of the best times to experience a safari in Southern Africa.

For travelers from the Northern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed, our winters run roughly from May through September.

During this period, the bush becomes thinner and drier, making wildlife easier to see as animals concentrate around remaining water sources. It’s one of the most reliable times of year for consistent game viewing across both national parks and private reserves.

But safari is not just about wildlife sightings. It’s the early morning drives, the stillness of the bush, the movement of herds through open land, and evenings around the fire after a full day in the field.

Our founder Joshua Lawes didn’t start in the safari industry.

His early years were spent working in conservation environments in South Africa’s Greater Kruger region, where wildlife protection and anti-poaching work shaped his understanding of the field from the ground up.

Later, he moved into Zambia, where his work expanded into logistics and coordination across remote conservation areas. Giving him a broader view of how conservation systems actually function beyond field operations.

Over time he started to notice a consistent gap.
Most people will never experience what conservation actually looks like on the ground.

And that gap matters, because how people understand wildlife directly influences how it is valued and protected.

That realization became the foundation for One Niner Expeditions.

Today, we design small-group and private safari experiences across Southern Africa that go beyond wildlife viewing. They focus on context, understanding, and connection to the landscapes and conservation systems behind them.

Joshua's goal has never changed, only the way it is delivered.

There’s a quieter, more untouched side of Kruger National Park that most travellers never get to experience.

Far from the busier southern regions, Northern Kruger is a landscape of open wilderness, winding rivers, ancient elephant paths, and some of the most rewarding wildlife encounters in Southern Africa.

In 2027, we will be hosting a series of very small-group safaris into this incredible region of the park.
