The ZAR was officially proclaimed independent from the British in 1853,this means that the ZAR was without railway for 40 years!
This was mostly due to the stubbornness of the government - they wanted to be a self sufficient Republic.

We start the experience at **Shalimar Delights**, a beloved hub for traditional Indian sweet meats — think rich, fudge-like treats that set the tone for the journey ahead.
From there, we step into the colourful streets of Fordsburg, where food, culture, and history collide in the best possible way.
✨ First stop: Lilian Road Studios
We pause to admire an incredible mosaic by local artist Hannelie Coetzee — a striking piece of urban storytelling.
🍻 Then we swing by Archie’s — a legendary, no-frills Jozi dive bar famous for cold beers and iconic polony sandwiches.
As we explore, we unpack how food traders and merchants helped shape life on the Witwatersrand, turning Fordsburg into one of the city’s true cultural crossroads.
We pass the iconic Oriental Plaza and uncover its deeper history tied to forced removals — stories that shaped Johannesburg as we know it today.
And then… the FEAST begins 😋
Around Market Square, the world comes together on a single block:
Turkish, Pakistani, Greek, Syrian, and South Indian flavours all in one place.
