The new regulations aimed at improving the safety of children travelling into and out of South Africa came into effect on 1 June 2015.

Children under the age of 18 now require an unabridged birth certificate (an official signed and stamped certificate reflecting both parents' details) together with a passport when travelling abroad.

Children travelling with both parents: Each child requires an unabridged birth certificate and valid passport.

Child travelling with one parent: The child requires an unabridged birth certificate, valid passport and a court order / death certificate / affidavit confirming that the absent parent has given permission for the child to travel.

Child travelling with a guardian: The child requires an unabridged birth certificate, valid passport and a court order / death certificate / affidavit confirming that the parents have given permission for the child to travel.

Unaccompanied child: The child must produce an unabridged birth certificate, valid passport and a court order / death certificate / affidavit confirming permission to travel from both parents or legal guardian. For a child travelling into South Africa, a letter from the person who will receive the child including their full contact details and a certified copy of their ID / passport must be produced.
