SA Chefs is a SAQA-recognized Professional Body and is a Level 2 BBBEE provider. Its core purpose is to set and maintain the highest level of culinary excellence, food standards and professionalism throughout South Africa. We accomplish these goals through the transfer of skills and the upliftment of individuals, our members… ‘The South African Chef’. One of our many objectives is to have a signif

icant impact on the careers of the chefs with whom we share the knowledge that our members have acquired through international food promotions, competitions, workshops, educational conferences and various other learning experiences. SA Chefs currently has over 12 000 members, who include catering and hotel company directors, restaurateurs, chefs, cooks, culinary educators, apprentices and trainees and can be found in every type of catering activity. The governing body of SA Chefs is a board of directors – 10 leaders in the catering world, elected to serve the interests of the Association in a voluntary capacity. Our training and demonstration facility at the SA Chefs headquarters houses the Southern Sun Centre for Culinary Excellence, with a state-of-the-art Skills Kitchen and Culinary Theatre and a reference library. This was created in partnership with the University of Johannesburg and built with sponsorship from companies in the hospitality industry. This is where we fulfill our mandate of training, offering subsidised, basic skills courses to members of the hospitality industry, be they formal or informal. Culinary Team South Africa has represented our country in the Culinary Olympics since 1980 and received official team status from the Bureau of Heraldry in 2008, becoming South Africa’s official representative in the culinary world. The Team is run on sponsorship and they meet regularly to practice both the Cold Table and Hot Kitchen, as these are the two sections of the Olympics.

The CTH - Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality Student Chef Skills Showcase - Mzansi is HERE, and it’s your time to shine!
Are you ready to unleash your creativity, passion, and love for South African flavours? This is YOUR chance to showcase your skills and make your mark in the culinary world.

Who can enter?
-Students studying at a SA Chefs Skills Development Provider (Training Provider) member (campus must be a member).
-Students studying at an institution offering CTH Qualifications.

Your Mission:
Create a THREE-COURSE MENU that:
-Celebrates South African food flavours.
-Includes at least one plant-based dish.
-Is balanced, seasonal, and costed (with a suggested selling price).
-Comes with recipes (yield: 4 portions) and photos of your dishes (storyboard style).

Throwback Thursday!

A celebration of plant-based innovation at Makers Landing!

The SA Chefs Plant-Based Workshop was an unforgettable day filled with inspiration, innovation, and incredible flavor – all centered around sustainable plant-based cooking.

We were thrilled to host a lineup of passionate speakers and creators:

Britney Varley from Wild Eatery shared her insights into natural, plant-inspired cuisine.

Emma Claire from The Good Life Show and Emm.porium gave a live demo on how to make creamy, delicious vegan cheese.

Mark Tedder of Munch Bowls highlighted their plant-based, zero-waste edible bowls – which starred in our friendly competition! Attendees had just 30 minutes to create their best plant-based bowl using fresh ingredients sponsored by Urban Fresh, Fresh Trading, and ZA Foods.

Amy Hoppy, cookbook author and foodie, spoke about her journey in the plant-based world and how it’s shaped her career.

Clare Ewing from Fry’s (RCL Foods) shared the story behind Living Kindly and introduced guests to a mouthwatering vegan butter chicken tasting featuring Fry’s products.

Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating the future of food. Let’s keep building a more conscious and creative culinary community – one plant-based plate at a time.
