It's Never the Mona Lisa I Remember
People often ask me what my favourite travel memories are.
The truth is, it's rarely the famous landmarks.
I don't remember the Mona Lisa at the Louvre nearly as vividly as I remember the charming Frenchie chatting to me over a croissant at a tiny café in Paris.
Or being invited into someone's home for dinner in Saigon.
Or trekking through mud in Rwanda, crying, wet , and looking for my kids who had walked ahead of me.
For me, travel has always been about experiences. Big or small. Planned or unexpected. Those are the moments that stay with us.
This week I had a wonderful group of guests from Australia exploring Soweto with me. When I offered them the chance to try Mopani worms, I expected at least a little hesitation.
Not a blink.
"Let's do it!" they all said.
And there we were, standing in the heart of Soweto, sharing stories and tasting one of Africa's most unique delicacies.
Will they remember every street we drove down? Probably not.
Will they remember the day they ate Mopani worms in Soweto with a bunch of new friends? Absolutely.
Those are the memories that last a lifetime.
And I absolutely love being part of creating them. ❤️

“Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.” –Oscar Wilde
This past weekend ..I explored Johannesburg with a guest from Brooklyn, New York, whose family history is deeply connected to our city. He showed me where his grandfather — one of Johannesburg’s first architects — built his home, and we visited Baragwanath Hospital where his father worked for many years as a specialist in communicable diseases.
Then, while standing outside Mandela House in Soweto, he shared that his wife’s grandfather, Hymie Basner, gave Nelson Mandela his very first opportunity as an articled clerk in his law firm.
What a privilege to spend a day uncovering these extraordinary personal connections to South African history.

✨ WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER SKIP JOBURG ✨
Had the most wonderful guests from Connecticut this week — and when they arrived, they were honestly so nervous about visiting Johannesburg. They told me that even South Africans living in the US had warned them not to come to Joburg.
But despite all the scary reports, they decided — very cautiously — to spend the day with me exploring this city that I love so much.
And wow… what a day we had.
We visited the Apartheid Museum and journeyed through the history of South Africa, spent time exploring vibrant Soweto, wandered through some of Joburg’s amazing artistic precincts, and to top it all off, I hosted them at my home for a proper South African braai. 🇿🇦🔥
At the end of the evening they said:
“We wish we had booked another day in Joburg.”
Honestly, it saddens me sometimes how much bad press Johannesburg receives, because I promise you — you will struggle to find a warmer, more genuine welcome anywhere else in South Africa.
Joburg has soul.
It has creativity.
It has history.
It has energy.
And above all, it has people with huge hearts.
So please — don’t skip Johannesburg. Come spend the day with me and let me show you the Joburg and Soweto that I know and love. ❤️

Not Every Adventure Needs a Mountain
Last weekend we couldn’t do a major hike as my beautiful hiking partner injured her leg, so we decided to leave her behind and opt for a close-to-home walk instead.
Although I live in Joburg, it constantly amazes me how, the moment I step outside my little bubble, I discover places I’ve never seen or even heard of before.
This little adventure took us to Asidlale Adventure Park in Barbeque Downs/Sandton — and honestly, it was such a pleasant surprise.
An easy, flat walk surrounded by nature, birds, flowing water, mountain bikers, and fresh air… exactly the kind of gentle reset the soul sometimes needs.
Sometimes the best adventures are not the big dramatic ones, but the unexpected gems right on your doorstep. I may just find myself back there again this weekend. 🌿🚶‍♂️

ART & ABOUT. First-time visitors to Johannesburg will always hear me say: “You have to start with Soweto.” ❤️
But when guests have a little more time, I love exploring another side of Joburg - the incredible art, creativity, colour, and talent that flows through this city.
This week I had the pleasure of spending the day with a guest from Santa Fe, New Mexico, and his beautiful partner, who had visited Joburg before and wanted to experience more of its artistic heartbeat. Despite the rainy weather, we had such a special day discovering the creativity that makes Johannesburg so unique. 🎨✨
A very special shout out to Glynda Kramer - Glynda has supported my journey from the very beginning. She referred my very first guest on my very first tour and continues to send her guests my way through our amazing YPO family. Your support, kindness, and belief in So Where To Adventures means more than you know. Thank you Glynds! 🙏🌍
