What’s the best wildlife photo you’ve ever taken at an airport?
I’ve got a pretty amazing story to share. After an unforgettable trip to the Kgalagadi, I had a scheduled flight from Upington to Johannesburg in South Africa.
I arrived at Upington Airport about two hours before departure. While checking in, I heard the call of a Rock Kestrel (Falco rupicolus). At first, I didn’t think much of it and continued with my bags. Upington is a tiny airport, and as I sat waiting for my flight, I kept hearing the kestrel calling. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to investigate.
As I stepped outside, I saw the Rock Kestrel flying straight toward me—with a sand lizard in its bill! It was delivering prey to its partner at the nest. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. The lighting was perfect: the kestrel was side-lit by the sun, and the background was in deep shadow—ideal for a dramatic low-key photograph.
Since they were clearly breeding, I figured the behaviour might be predictable. I quickly grabbed my camera gear and positioned myself in what I thought would be the perfect spot. I could see the kestrel hunting in the distance, but time was tight—my flight was boarding in 50 minutes.
The suspense was real. It took the kestrel nearly 40 minutes to return, flying straight toward me again. I captured the shot just 10 minutes before boarding—talk about cutting it close!
I’m thrilled with the photo. It’s a rare blend of action, anticipation, and artistry—all captured at an airport of all places.
