No zoom lens was needed for these photos of Hwange’s elephants. They were simply that close. So close, in fact, that at times we couldn't fit them into frame. What we captured instead were the details: the deep folds of skin, wiry hairs, thick eyelashes, and even toenails.

During our recent stay with Tum Tum Treehouse Lodge in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, we spent an afternoon in the underground hide (called a Look Up blind) beside Mandiseka waterhole. Sitting out of sight, we watched in spellbound silence as the herd arrived to drink in the golden light. We heard every rumble and felt every splash🐘💦

Three ways to experience Victoria Falls 🌈

On paper, the facts are impressive: the largest sheet of falling water on Earth, and twice as high as Niagara Falls. But in person, it’s something else entirely. The rumble you feel in your chest, the spray that leaves you delightfully drenched, and the sheer force of it all. It’s little wonder this mighty spectacle is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders”.

There are many ways to witness Victoria Falls, but we recommend three in particular: explore on foot with a private guide, see the full scale from a helicopter or, if you’re feeling brave, swim right at the edge in Cataract Island Pools, as we did on our recent visit. We’d do it again in a heartbeat.

A sunset cruise is an essential Victoria Falls experience. Meander along the wild, vibrant Zambezi as hippos surface in the golden light, elephants wade through the reeds, and ancient-looking crocs line the banks. Then, sundowner in hand, watch the palm-fringed islands slowly turn to silhouettes as the sun melts into the horizon 🌅

The water’s edge is also teeming with birdlife. On our own cruise with Victoria Falls River Lodge we were even lucky enough to spot a rare African finfoot.
