Vic Falls; Zimbabwean 🇿🇼 or Zambian 🇿🇲 side? Victoria Falls forms a natural yet treacherous border between the two Southern African countries. For awesome, frontal views of the smoke that thunders you’ll need to be on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River. But, for Devil’s Pool, the swimmable pool on the edge of the mighty falls, you’ll need to be on the Zambian side. The truth is, both sides have their advantages depending on the time of year you visit and it’s easy to move between the two countries via the border post (remember your passport). Victoria Falls is great any time of the year but if you want to see the Falls in full flow, the best time to visit is between February and May. During this period, the mighty Zambezi is flowing at its peak after the summer rainfall and the sheer volume of water pouring over Vic Falls is spectacular when viewed from the Zimbabwean side 🇿🇼

Packing. It’s an inevitable part of any trip you take and can be a rollercoaster of emotions depending on how late in the day you leave it. Decision, decisions. Am I overpacking? Underpacking? What bag should I take?

Well, if you want more space in your luggage, seasoned travellers swear by rolling (not folding) their clothes. Not only does rolling your clothes free up more space, but it also keeps creasing to a minimum.

Like most duty-free shops around the world, prices at Mauritius’ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport are considerably higher than what you’d pay for the same items outside the airport. Our advice; don’t do your holiday gift shopping at the airport. The Euro prices and mean markups prove that duty free isn’t the most affordable.

Have you seen the Seven Coloured Sands in Chamarel, Mauritius? 🇲🇺

Also known as the Seven Coloured Earths, this unique geological formation is a relatively small area of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colours (red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow).

Definitely worth a visit when it’s too breezy for the beach in the south-west.

When paying with your credit or debit card overseas, avoid outrageous exchange rates and fees by opting to pay in local currency instead of ZAR. If you choose ZAR, little known “dynamic currency conversion” charges are applied by the party handling the transaction. Selecting to pay in local currency means your bank at home handles the currency conversion. They will closely track the “true” currency conversion rate, meaning it’s usually cheaper.
