🌿A week of fiery sunrises, wellness, community, conservation and connection. This was Winter in the Barefoot Capital this week. 🌿

From the Kenton Wellness Festival and creative workshops, to volunteers rolling up their sleeves for a community beach clean-up, it was another reminder that winter doesn't slow life down here β€” it simply gives us time to enjoy it differently.

There were barefoot beach walks, family moments by the sea, colourful skies reflected in tidal pools, river views, village gatherings, conservation conversations and even a powerful rhino message sculpted into the sand.

Above it all, Venus and Jupiter graced the evening sky, while visitors and locals alike enjoyed everything from sunrise swims and coffee catch-ups to sundowners, good food and simple moments outdoors.

As another beautiful week draws to a close, we extend a warm Sunshine Coast welcome to everyone visiting for K-Day Weekend. πŸ’›

⚽ Tonight, South Africa takes on Mexico in the FIFA World Cup at 21:00. Wherever you're watching from, here's hoping Bafana Bafana give us another reason to celebrate. πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

🌊 OUR COMMUNITY. OUR COASTLINE. 🌊

Over the past few weeks, we've watched swollen rivers reshape our coastline and carry natural debris downstream to the sea.

And then the ocean gave some of it back.

This morning, our community came together to help clear the debris that had washed ashore between Middle Beach and Kariega Beach. Branches, reeds and vegetation carried downstream during the recent floods had collected along the shoreline and amongst the dunes.

Interestingly, there was very little litter to be found.

It felt like the ocean was doing its part β€” and we were doing ours.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed their time, energy and equipment:

πŸ₯ Sue Sievwright – Breakfast rolls for the Working for Water Team

πŸ’™ Boesmans Kariega Estuary Care
πŸ’™ And all the volunteers who spent their morning helping care for this special stretch of coastline.

Our rivers, estuaries and ocean are all part of the same story. Today's clean-up was a reminder of just how connected they are β€” and of what can be achieved when a community comes together.

Thank you for helping care for this special place. πŸ’›
Love where you live. πŸ’›

Our beaches, coves and rock pools are part of what makes life in Kenton so special.

They're where we swim at sunrise, walk with friends, explore hidden corners of the coastline, watch dolphins offshore and simply enjoy time outdoors.

The recent big rains have left a significant amount of debris along the shoreline.

Today is 🌊 WORLD OCEANS DAY πŸ’™ and we are our community to come together and help restore this beautiful stretch of coastline between Middle Beach and Kariega Beach.

🌿 Community Beach Clean-Up

βœ”οΈ Rakes
βœ”οΈ Refuse bags

A tractor and trailer will be available to assist with removing the collected debris.

Whether you're a regular beach walker, ocean swimmer, paddler, resident or visitor, even an hour of your time will make a meaningful difference.

One of the things we love most about Kenton is the way people step forward when help is needed. Tomorrow is one of those opportunities.

A sincere thank you to Adrian Purdon, KOSRA and Estuary Care for coordinating this important initiative.

πŸ’™ This World Oceans Day, let's celebrate our ocean by caring for the coastline that gives us so much in return.

🌿 Winter, the Barefoot Way

It's been quite a week on the Sunshine Coast.

The rain has kept coming, the rivers are running high, and the ocean has turned a muddy brown as fresh water makes its way to the sea. It's not a sight we see every winter, and it's a reminder of just how much water has fallen across our catchments.

While some roads remain affected and schools have closed, there have also been moments that make you stop and look.

A rainbow over the beach.

A river in full flow.

A warm fire.

A good cup of coffee.

Friends gathering for the Kenton Wellness Festival.

Winter looks a little different this week, but that's part of the magic of living close to nature. Every season has its own character, and right now the Sunshine Coast is feeling wonderfully alive.

Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the season. πŸ’›

Winter in the Barefoot Capital doesn’t fade β€” it shifts πŸ’™

Slow mornings along the river mouth. Quiet roads before the day starts. The coastline moving at its own pace.

Sunrise sits low over the water, changing everything it touches without noise or effort.β˜€οΈ

Out at sea, dolphins pass through briefly, then disappear again into the blue.

Early walks, coffee in hand, and a coastline that carries on quietly in the background.

Because here, winter doesn’t take colour away.
It simply shows it differently. πŸ’™

Winter has a way of slowing things down.
Not in a sleepy way.
In a notice-the-light, linger-a-little-longer, appreciate-where-you-are kind of way.

The beaches feel wider.
The skies seem bigger.
The colours a little richer.

From wildlife encounters and wide-open landscapes to unforgettable sunrises, coastal adventures and the simple pleasure of spending time outdoors, winter reveals a different side of the Sunshine Coast.

All winter asks is that we step outside.

The reward is often something beautiful.

A few moments from the past week across Kenton-on-Sea, Cannon Rocks, Port Alfred and the Sunshine Coast. πŸ’™

🌊 A Barefoot Capital Winter Through Scandinavian Eyes

Hilla from Finland and Embla from Norway have spent the past year in South Africa as Rotary exchange students, based in Johannesburg.

Before heading home, they spent a week in Kenton β€” and judging by the stories, swims, laughs and full days out and about, they made the most of every minute.

Coming from Northern Europe, they weren’t quite sure what to expect from a small coastal town on the Sunshine Coast.

What they found was a place where everything feels close β€” the beach, the rivers, the cafΓ©s, the walking paths and the ocean all within easy reach.

πŸ’¬ β€œIt’s small, but also so alive.”

Their Kenton week quickly filled up with simple outdoor moments β€” jogging down to the beach, swimming in the ocean, walking barefoot, exploring without much of a plan, and saying yes to whatever the day brought.

One of their funniest β€œonly in Kenton” moments was heading to the shops straight after a swim, still in bikinis, while everyone else was wrapped up for winter.

For them, our winter felt familiar.

πŸ’¬ β€œIt feels like a Norwegian summer.”

One of their favourite memories was a Diaz Cross walk that turned into a proper Kenton adventure.

What started as a simple coastal walk became hours of exploring β€” collecting shells, following the shoreline, watching the tide shift and eventually stopping on a dune for breakfast with the ocean spread out in front of them.

It wasn’t planned. That was the best part.

They also spent time at Shelly Bay, Bushmans River and quieter stretches of beach β€” swimming, exploring and making the most of the space around them.

What stood out for them was how easily town, beach, river and nature connect here β€” no big planning needed. Just step outside and go.

By the end of the week, winter in Kenton had become beach walks, ocean swims, sunny afternoons and plenty of time outside.

As they get ready to head home, their answer was easy:

πŸ’¬ β€œWe are definitely coming back.”

The Barefoot Capital, seen through Scandinavian eyes β€” full of sunshine, open space and the kind of fun that seems to happen naturally here. πŸ’›
