The Barefoot Capital may be known for taking life slowly, but we’re about to head into a very busy few weeks.

There’s already a sense of things beginning to stir. The coral trees are blossoming, we’ve had balmy days and welcome rain, and both locals and visitors have enjoyed some phenomenal wildlife sightings. Add deep-sea fishing, horses on the beach and sunrise swims, and it’s clear that the Barefoot Capital is waking up for spring.

🥢 There’s good news from the village too. Kenton Asian will reopen on 15 September under the new ownership of the Dwyers. We’re delighted to see the doors opening again and wish them every success.

🏉🇿🇦 Meet Esethu Mnebelele 🇿🇦🏉

At just 20 years old, Siphosethu “Esethu” Mnebelele has already achieved what most rugby players can only dream of.

A former KES and SA Schools captain, Esethu was part of the Junior Springbok team that won the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship. A year later, he led South Africa to a second consecutive world title, captaining the Junior Boks to a hard-fought 16–5 victory over France in the 2026 final.

The powerful young Sharks ho**er was subsequently named by World Rugby as one of the tournament’s ten rising stars—and described as a born leader with a very bright future.

Rugby is woven into South Africa’s heritage. So too is the rhino. As part of Kenton Rhino Rising 2026, this special Heritage Month evening brings the two together—celebrating the power of sport and leadership while helping to protect one of our country’s most iconic species for future generations.

Now, Esethu is coming to Kenton.

Join us for an intimate evening beneath the stars as he shares his journey, the values that have shaped him and what it means to lead and represent South Africa on the international stage.

Spring has arrived, and across Kenton, our gardens are coming to life once again. 🌱

In the heart of Kenton-on-Sea, our CBD Beautification Garden is a meaningful example of what can happen when people come together to care for the spaces around them.

The garden is also part of a wider effort to bring more indigenous trees and plants into our village spaces — creating greener, healthier surroundings while celebrating the natural character of Kenton-on-Sea and the landscape around us.

It doesn’t have to happen all at once. A single indigenous sapling planted today can become part of Kenton’s landscape for years to come.

As the saying goes: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”

So this Spring, let’s appreciate the gardens, the people behind them and the little touches that help make our village feel like home. 🌿

There was a little Kenton magic everywhere this week—from whale tails offshore and an eclipse overhead to sculptures rising from the sand and South African music legends lighting up Bushmans. ✨

Indian Ocean Safaris enjoyed exceptional sightings of three different whale species—Humpback, Southern Right and Bryde’s whales—along with Common Dolphins. What a time to be out on our ocean! 🐋🐬

The full moon brought its own drama, with a partial lunar eclipse on 28 August giving us another reason to look up. 🌕

Down on the beach, Supersandman has been sculpting away, while local artist Mike Wells created his own wonderfully imaginative sculpture on Bushmans Beach. Clearly, creativity is catching! 🎨

Bushmans also welcomed South African music legends Arno Carstens and Theo Crous, with local lad Griffin Gibson joining them for a jam. The evening was brilliantly supported—what a special moment for Griffin and a fantastic night for our village! 🎶

Rotary went Indian for the evening with a colourful Curry Night filled with fun, friendship and plenty of community spirit.

Meanwhile, lots is happening behind the scenes as preparations gather pace for Kenton Rhino Rising from 17–20 September and the Barefoot Arts Meander from 24–27 September. September is going to be a big one! 🦏🎨

🐋 The humpbacks are on the move!

Our coastline has been alive with whales this week—one extraordinary encounter unfolded approximately 4 km offshore, where a dead humpback whale attracted several great white sharks—nature at its rawest.

Further up the Bushmans River, boaters spotted a pride of lions along the bank. And at Middle Beach, Innocent Zungu — our visiting Supersandman — is creating a rhino sculpture with a powerful conservation message. 🦏🏖️

Also making memories this week were Kenton on Sea Primary School’s Grade 7s, who had a wonderful time on their school tour in Hartenbos. We hope they returned home with plenty of happy stories to share! 💛

From extraordinary wildlife encounters to art with purpose, it’s been one of those weeks that reminds us just how special this stretch of coast really is.
