On the night of 5 October the Aurora Australis was predicted to make it's return to our skies again. However, thick fog over most of the Cape, along with extremely strong winds in places made spotting anything nigh impossible.

As a last ditch effort, we went to the Maasbaai Slip at Pringle Bay, but again, fog made seeing anything impossible. However, driving back to Pringle Bay at 02:30, past The Hangklip Hotel and Hangklip Peak, there was a break in the fog due to the strong wind through the valley and we stopped to take a few shots...at least the fog over the peak would've looked cool.

At first, no Aurora was visible in the photos, but as soon as I started going through my normal editing process, a bit of colour slowly came out...a reddish hue on the horizon!! Aurora Australis? Or hazing effect? Can't call it for sure, but it sure looks cool! 🤗😁

The Grille Shack is situated on the most beautiful coastal drive in the world - Clarence Drive, approximately 5 km outside Gordon’s Bay, just before the Steenbras River Bridge.

Pure Magic

So after hinting at my Pringle Bay (Maasbaai) Milky Way shoot, here it finally is, all done and dusted! 🙌🏻

50 Sky photos and 10 foreground photos merged into a single panoramic view of the glorious Milky Way as viewed from Maasbaai Slipway, Pringle Bay, South Africa, during New Moon two weeks ago. 📷🌌⭐️

Left you can clearly see the lights from Seafarm in the foreground, with Betty's Bay, Kleinmond, Fisherhaven, Hawston, Hermanus and Gansbaai beyond into the distance, with Kaap Hangklip Lighthouse casting its light across the sea and bay on the right. Barely visible in the middle on the horizon, bioluminescent waves are breaking across the rocky shoreline.

In the sky, the Milky Way is clearly visible, with the Galactic Centre to the left, gas and interstellar dust plumes (the black shadows) and several constellations, not to mention the millions of stars and planets 🪐🌕🌌⭐️

See if you can spot Scorpio and the Southern Cross 😉
