ZIMBABWE ATM'S RUN DRY!

On any given day, travellers in Zimbabwe may not be able to draw cash from their bank of choice as the ongoing ATM cash shortage continues in the country.

Travellers to Zimbabwe are now being advised to bring along cash in US dollars as some banks do not have cash for the ATMs every day.

Earlier this week, the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office issued an update for those travelling to the country, advising them that “Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a severe shortage of cash. It’s not currently possible to make cash withdrawals with an international bank card”.

But Ross Kennedy, Africa Albida chief executive says the cash shortage in ATMs is variable. “Some banks’ ATMs have cash today, but could have none tomorrow. It all depends on each bank’s supply of notes.”

Some of the machines are dispensing the local bond notes, while others are dispensing US dollars, says Mr Chakunda from the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority. “It all depends on the financial institution and which bank the traveller is using,” he says.

Visa and MasterCards can still be swiped, say tour operators on the ground, who have also indicated that many areas frequented by business and leisure travellers do provide card swiping facilities.

“Cash withdrawals are very restricted at most ATMs, so we recommend that all clients bring some US dollar cash with them for incidentals and certainly if they are going to remote areas. However, credit cards are widely accepted, so clients can pay for most things using their Visa or MasterCard,” explains Laura Dacomb from Travel Wild Africa.

“We recommend that travellers prepay for activities and meals where possible,” adds Dacomb.

BEWARE OF EXTORTION AT SOUTH AFRICAN AIRPORTS
Travel agents should advise passengers at South African airports to be wary of and report incidents of extortion from trolley operators who demand large amounts of money for pushing passengers’ luggage. Acsa told TAM that incidents should be reported at the nearest iHelp desk or police station.

Gellé Ritchie, Africa Safari Expert at Live 4 Africa.com, says that recently two separate client groups, fell victim to the operators and paid between $70 (R980) and $100 (R1 400) to OR Tambo International Airport’s trolley staff for pushing their luggage. Both groups had to connect with domestic flights immediately after their international flight had landed and were approached by the trolley staff as soon as they had cleared customs. Ritchie’s clients told her that the staff became “quite aggressive” when clients offered them anything less than the amount stipulated.

The Airport Security teams are co-operating fully with the airport-based government agencies entrusted with the management and/or removal of criminal elements, says Acsa.

Passengers are encouraged to use only airport-accredited porters when they require assistance. They are identifiable by the bright orange uniform that clearly states the porter’s name and operating number.

South Africans can now apply for their passports and Smart IDs online via the eHomeAffairs portal.

Previously, online application was limited to those between the ages of 30 and 35. Now, there is no age limit, however first-time applicants cannot use the online service. Now first-time applicants would still need to apply for their passports and IDs at one of the 140 Home Affairs offices equipped for Smart ID services.

Applicants for passports and IDs will also now be able to apply and collect from the branches of four major banks of which they are customers. Customers of Absa, First National Bank, Nedbank and Standard Bank will be able to visit 12 branches in Gauteng and one in Cape Town to apply for and collect their Smart ID Cards and passports. The department is in the process of rolling out the new online services to more banks and Home Affairs offices around the country.
