One of two Massive lions that we saw feeding on a Buffalo near Salitjie here in Kruger National Park. This one also had a bad limp and we're not sure if it was from fighting with his coalition patner or an injury from the Buffalo. Nevertheless it was a beautiful sighting shared with our Photographic patner From New Zealand Marrox Photographic Safaris

Why is this Tortoise eating Hyena Dung?
You never know what the Kruger bushveld is going to throw at you! A few days ago, my guests and I witnessed this mind-blowing moment of a tortoise actively feeding on dry hyena dung.
While it might look shocking or even a bit gross at first glance, this is actually a masterclass in survival and the perfect example of nature leaving absolutely nothing to waste.
Leopard tortoises are primarily herbivores, spending their days grazing on grasses, succulents, and thistles. However, building and maintaining that massive, highly domed armored shell requires a massive amount of minerals specifically calcium and phosphorus. Female tortoises need even more of it to develop the tough shells of their eggs.
Because the soils and plants can be mineral deficient, tortoises have to look for alternative dietary supplements. This leads them to two fascinating behaviors Osteophagia: Gnawing on old bones.Coprophagia : Eating the f***s of carnivores. Why Hyena Dung Specifically?
Spotted hyenas have incredibly powerful jaws capable of crushing heavy bones. Because their diet is so rich in bone matter, their f***s dry out into a distinct, chalky white substance that is packed with concentrated, easily digestible calcium carbonate.
To a leopard Tortoise a chunk of dry hyena dung isn't waste it's a vital, premium-grade calcium supplement!
The African bush never ceases to amaze me. It is a completely connected circle of life where a apex predator’s leftovers directly fuel the growth of one of our 'Little Five'.

Every now and then, you cross paths with someone who completely changes how you see dedication. For me, that person is Shane Ngwenya. Out of all the incredible people working inside Kruger National Park, Shane is without a doubt my favorite young person in the field.What makes Shane so exceptional isn't just his vast knowledge, but his profound humility and kindness. He is a truly wonderful, gentle young man, and I carry an immense amount of respect for him. He holds a vital role in the future of South African conservation, yet carries that responsibility with the most admirable grace and a constant, welcoming smile. At the Nsasani Trust, Shane works tirelessly at the intersection of conservation, field biology, education, and student development. His days are spent guiding, driving, and teaching students during immersive, field-based conservation programmes inside the park. He uses his advanced expertise in herpetology, ecology, GIS, and fieldwork to help the next generation gain practical skills, assisting with vital biological fieldwork and biodiversity research. But more than just teaching science, he helps young minds build a deep, lasting connection with nature.Every time I meet him in the park, I am reminded of how lucky our wilderness is to have him. Thank you, Shane, for your passion, your humility, and for being such an incredible human being. Keep shining young man . I love you so much .
