West Coast leopard cubs.

Landmark celebrates the detection of the first leopard cubs photographed on the West Coast.

The Landmark Leopard project activity started on the West Coast of South Africa in 2019. We operated with the knowledge that leopards were exterminated along the West Coast in the 1840s. There were early suggestions of their re-emergence roundabout 2015 and one or two grainy images were obtained. This prompted us to commence a camera trap survey. This camera survey developed into a full research program between Cape Town on the West Coast and the Berg River north of Langebaan. We initially detected sporadic male leopards, which is typical of early dispersal individuals in recolonisations. By 2022 we detected the first female and were expecting to see cubs which had not materialised for four years, until now. We had begun to think she was infertile but the latest camera footage indicated 2 cubs, estimated at 3 to 4 months of age. This is obviously fantastic news for Leopard Conservation in this part of the world, but early days yet. These results are testimony to conservation and coexistence efforts of land owners, and a growing ethos of coexistence. We salute the efforts of all involved!
