The Wild Coast is part of the former Transkei, one of the most unspoilt coastal areas in South Africa. Also called Pondoland, the people who live in small villages along the coast are known as the Pondo people, whose culture and traditions you will be able to take part if you choose the village homestay option of the hike. The hikes are easy and relaxing, with opportunities for swimming in fresh water pools and in the sea. Your local guide Bongani loves his beautiful home and points out all its many small wonders, from parts of old shipwrecks along the beaches and mystical caves to stunning rock formations and various plants used by the local people for medicinal purposes. Pondoland is also a centre of endemism with many rare plants. Look for dolphins out at sea, bring your binoculars for birding and look for springbok, eland, wildebeest and kudu when hiking through the Mkambati Nature Reserve!
