Yesterday produced an incredible three Southern Banded Snake Eagles in the Eastern Shores section of Wetland Park, including one perched up next to the road, drying off after a rain shower. Back-of-camera shot here. Highlight of a great day out, despite the rain!

Lawson's Destination of the Day: Kakamega Forest, Kenya.

An exciting birding destination on our Birds & Wildlife of Kenya safari. A large, tropical forest patch, representing Kenya's only tropical rainforest, a remnant of the great forests that once extended eastwards from central Africa. One of Kenya's biodiversity hot-spots. Loads of cool bird species - Turner's Eremomela, Blue-headed Bee-eater, Grey-winged and Blue-shouldered Robin Chats, Black-billed Turaco, Great Blue Turaco (wow!), Ross's Turaco, Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill (another 'wow' species), White-headed Wood Hoopoe, Chestnut Wattle-eye, Jameson's Wattle-eye, African Blue Flycatcher, Geenbuls galore and many others.

On our itinerary we include three nights here to make the most of it, and to allow for a spot of rain denying us an hour or two of birding here and there.

One of the highlights is the legendary afternoon tea-and-cake-on-the-lawn session, with binoculars in one hand to keep tabs on the birds in the garden and surrounding forest.

Birds shown are: Ross's Turaco, Bronze Sunbird, Great Blue Turaco, Yellow-billed Barbet, Equatorial Akalat, Mackinnon's Fiscal, Grey-throated Barbet, Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill, African Crowned Eagle and European Honey Buzzard. Black-and-White Colobus also shown.

Lawson's Sighting of the Day: White-winged Widow (Euplectes albonotatus) male working hard to impress a female; Mooiplaas Picnic Site, Kruger NP, South Africa.
In human terms, he's trying a little too hard! And looking a little too intense. In bird terms, he has to work to impress... And there's no room for failure in nature - he's not sporting his black coat and flashy shoulders for nothing. By summer's end he'll lose the black plumage and be almost as plain as the Jane he's trying to impress. Until springtime that is, when once again he'll start to develop his black summer breeding plumage and start to feel romantic again😎

Lawson's Bird of the Day: Secretarybird (Saggitarius serpentarius), the Snake Hunter.

A most sought-after bird for birders visiting Africa for the first time. And rightly so, as it's pretty unique (monotypic - the only Species in the Genus); a bit like an eagle on a stork's legs. Occurs across sub-Saharan Africa, stalking snakes, rodents, large arthropods, ground birds, small mammals etc. in any open habitats, such as savanna, grasslands, Karoo and semi-desert. Widespread but uncommon, and increasingly uncommon, as habitat transformation, agriculture, insecticide use etc. all have an effect on their numbers. Listed as Endangered in 2020.

Best place to see: in our experience, undoubtedly Ndutu and the Serengeti in Tanzania (saw 10 in one morning last year!). In South Africa, the Wakkerstroom district offers good odds too.

Join us on a dedicated birding safari to see this and many more incredible African birds (and other wildlife).

Lawson's Sighting of the Day: Hippo clash, Sunset Dam, Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Hippo's not seeing eye-to-eye on a cloudy morning at Sunset Dam, where there's often a bit of action to keep photographers busy. Light and distance were against us here on this occasion though, but you make do with the conditions at the time, and it still made for an amazing sighting before breakfast at Lower Sabie Rest Camp!

Lawson's Destination of the Week: Something a bit different... Let's take a look at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique 🇲🇿.

Mozambique is not often considered to be a safari destination, yet it does have some great parks, and foremost among those is Gorongosa. It's the subject of a wonderful recovery story, going from almost total ruin during the protracted civil war (prior to which it was something like the Garden of Eden) to one of the region's most attractive big parks. It's a big conservation success story!

Habitats are varied, including vast floodplains, lakes and shallow pans, various types of savanna and beautiful forests. The birding is very good, and it is most well-known for the very localized Geen-headed Oriole on Mount Gorongosa. A massive re-stocking program has brought the game viewing back to something of its former glory, and visitors can see a wide range of species, from Elephants to Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog, a range of antelope etc. Quite a feat considering that, in the 1990's Waterbuck and Baboons were virtually all that remained of the once abundant herds of animals...

The best way to get to Gorongosa is via a regional flight to Beira, and then a small plane flight into the park. There are several accommodation options, from more basic but comfortable 'rest camp' accommodation to more exclusive lodges and a 'fly camping' set up on Mount Gorongosa.

So, if you're looking for a more unusual safari destination, why not consider Gorongosa National Park? (with Lawson's Safaris, of course!) 😎
