Popping down for a drink isn't that easy. Animals approaching a water hole have to take time to survey the area, looking for predators hidden in the bushes and then particularly with Giraffe, they need to be absolutely certain it is safe to get their legs into a really awkward position so that their long necks can get their mouth to the water. A sophisticated network of valves in the carotid artery prevent a blood rush as they lower their heads. The one Giraffe standing behind kept cavey while the others drank and then they left without this one having a drink

I would welcome comments on the variation of the patterns on Giraffe. I see the blocks as floor tiles with grouting around them. The one on the left has the "normal" SA version pattern with the "grouting" flowing into the cracks on each "tile". The giraffe drinking has complete / unbroken "tiles" with thick "grouting" around, similar in a way to the Reticulated Giraffe species found in some reserves in Kenya. Is this just a mild genetic variation, or could this be a sub-species? This picture was taken

How many Rhinos can you count? Unfortunately even with a dehorned animal, the poachers are ruthless and would kill one for the stump. Rhino have poor eyesight and may run towards the area where they have heard something, bringing them closer to the poachers and making for an easy target

This was such an obliging Bronze winged Courser, usually only offering a quick glimpse in the spot light on night drives. I was surprised with this sighting on our bush track in the lovely late afternoon light
