I felt I should share this and explain to many agents from Nigeria that have been asking me about the destination, visa and Airlines.
First I would like to remind you that you are a travel agent and a business with purpose to sell destinations and keep your head above waters. We got excited about Air Peace starting direct flight to Johannesburg hoping to see the best result in terms of tourists moving from the geant West Africa nation to the South Africa.
Being very close to Air Peace management since the time before the maiden flight LAS/JNB Air Peace had to take 2 sets of crew on the flight to avoid the cost of the crew layover on the ground. We will consider a layover as soon as numbers increase, the management said. Remember covid-19 is not to forget during the same period.
The sadness is to see the Airlines going from their B777-200 to E195 though E195 is a beautiful brand new Aircraft, it is a downgrade to the capacity compare to the B777......now Air Peace has to suspend flights due to less occupancy of seats. Even shocking, this is due to lack of visa issuance by the HC or Embassy of SA in Nigeria.
Now the question I received is why market the destination, why spend money on a specific country to attract their tourists yet make it difficult for agents to promote the destination or sell the destination?
My response:
When it comes to travel, there are two things; 1. to like a destination gets the traveller excited but 2. the destination should also like the traveller. When the travellers like the destination, they get excited about it, look forward to getting there. But when the destination likes the travellers, it makes it easier for the travellers to go, enjoy and leave with memorable souvenirs.
So as business, I advise travel agents to look at a destination that like their clients and their nationality, a destination that makes it easier to sell, to get people to travel to so that as a Travel agent you can make some money. A destination that makes you lose business as an agent is a destination that do not like that specific traveller.
We have to say that Air Peace is not suffering alone on this route. SAA schedule from/to Lagos is getting more and more confusing and this is probably due to less seats occupancy on this route. No wonder Air Cote d'Ivoire has come up with a very good strategy of flying from Johannesburg to Kinshasa in the RDC before connecting to West Africa and vice-versa.
To answer the question on the visa, agents should find a suitable and stress free destinations to propose and sell to their travellers.
