Nautilus Engineers was formed in 2002 as a direct result of the growing demand in South Africa (from small to medium size fabricators and engineering plants) for a capable yet cost-effective and flexible mechanical design consultant. Nautilus Engineers is a proud supporter of professional skills development and technological advancement. We believe in empowering young candidates and students in th

e engineering field by providing the knowledge and experience needed to excel in their careers. Our mission is to contribute to the growth of South Africa’s engineering sector by providing affordable engineering solutions whilst developing the skill levels and expertise of all our employees and interns. To further promote education and development, as part of our social responsibility, Nautilus Engineers pays the school fees of one less fortunate child every year. Nautilus Engineers is a small but dynamic team that prides itself on its hands-on and service-orientated approach. We provide soundly engineered solutions, together with prompt reliable service at a cost well below that of the large consulting firms. We use state-of-the-art design and CAD software to complement our in-house expertise. Nautilus has an extensive digital and regular technical library, containing up-to-date international standards (American; British; European and South African) and technical literature by leading authorities. Any client of Nautilus Engineers can expect, and will receive:

Nautilus Engineers performed the design calculations for an Oxygen Reactor in accordance with EN13445, the design code for Unfired Pressure Vessels. The reactor was manufactured by ND engineering to be used in the Pulp & Paper industry. The vessel was 5m in diameter and 37m tall. All pressure parts and lifting components were modelled using PV elite and checked against the design code requirements. Congratulations to the talented team that was able to complete the design and construction of this reactor.

Nautilus Engineers took on the design, drawing & 3D modeling of Tanalith® impregnation vessels for Lonza Wood Protection in October 2016. Tanalith® is a chemical preservative used to pre-treat wood for protection against insect attack and decay. The initial part of the impregnation process is demonstrated in the animation below.
The process involves an initial vacuum which is applied to the vessel once the wood is placed inside. This vacuum removes the air from the wood cells. Thereafter, the vessel is filled with Tanalith® solution whilst still under vacuum. A hydraulic pressure is then applied so that the preservative can pe*****te the wood. A final vacuum is applied after which the vessel is then brought down to atmospheric pressure.
For this project, Nautilus provided design calculations in accordance with the latest British design code - PD5500 and also used a first principle design approach to calculate the torque required to engage the locking mechanism on the doors. The models and animations were developed by their talented drawing team to ensure that the doors, locking mechanisms and other movable components that required high levels of precision could be operational without any clashes. This is yet another one of the many interesting projects that Nautilus has completed successfully during its 15 years of service in the industry.
