If you've joined us on a whale-watching tour and spotted a whale with strange white or pale patches on its skin, youโre not alone! These spots are completely natural and actually tell us a lot about the whaleโs life and health.
Most commonly seen on Southern Right Whales along the Mossel Bay coast, these white patches are caused by callosities โ roughened patches of skin that appear grey or white. But here's the fascinating part: they arenโt actually white themselves!
The white appearance comes from colonies of tiny crustaceans called whale lice (cyamids) that live on the callosities. These lice are harmless to the whale and tend to gather in specific areas like the head, chin, and around the blowhole.
Each whale has a unique pattern of callosities, much like a fingerprint, and researchers use these markings to identify individual whales!
So next time you spot those curious white patches, youโre actually witnessing one of natureโs amazing ID cards โ a living map that tells scientists who the whale is and even a little about where itโs been.
