October Fishing on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast
October is an exciting month for fishing on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and local anglers eagerly welcome the start of “Kobtober” — the period when anglers begin targeting large kob (salmon) along the surf and in nearby estuaries.
As water temperatures rise and conditions become more favourable, a variety of popular species become increasingly active.
What to Target in October
Kob (Cob)
October is a prime time to target kob, with shoals moving into the surf zones and estuaries. Larger fish can be targeted around deeper channels, sandbanks, river mouths and areas where baitfish are concentrated.
Grunter & Stumpnose
Grunter and stumpnose can be found in good numbers around estuaries, rocky gullies and deeper channels. These species provide excellent sport on lighter tackle and can make for an exciting session when the conditions are right.
Tidal Pool & Estuary Species
The September–October spring period offers excellent opportunities for lighter tackle fishing. Tidal pools, estuaries and sheltered rocky areas can produce a variety of species, making this an ideal time for family fishing trips and anglers looking for variety.
