👋 MEET LUNGILE – Support Coordinator at TravelBud

From sunny Durban beach days to temple walks in Japan, Lungile’s journey has been anything but ordinary 🌍✨

“I was born in Pietermaritzburg but grew up a true beach bum in Durban. My mom always joked that I loved being away from home—and she wasn’t wrong! After studying Psychology and Sociology in Cape Town, I dipped into culinary school (I’m obsessed with food!) before eventually getting my TEFL certificate and heading to Japan.”

Teaching abroad wasn’t just a career move for Lungile—it was a transformation.
🇯🇵 “Living in Japan changed my life. It’s a deeply collectivist culture that taught me so much about community, respect, and purpose. I taught everyone from toddlers to retirees in their 80s, and I learned just as much as I taught. I also did my best to learn Japanese—still going, by the way!”

Her favorite parts of Japan?
🥢 The food (Takoyaki, Ramen, Okonomiyaki, yes please).
🗻 The experiences (like standing in awe beneath the giant Buddha at Nokogiriyama’s Ni-hon Ji Temple).
🧘🏽‍♀️ And the way life there inspired her to live more intentionally.

Now back in South Africa, Lungile is one of the first friendly faces new TravelBud teachers will meet. She uses her lived experience to help others navigate the journey of moving and teaching abroad with confidence, clarity, and compassion.

“I still have the travel bug—Italy, Vietnam, and Mexico are calling. But until then, I’m here helping others take the leap.”
