The Cape Vultures, or Cape Griffons (Xhalanga in Xhosa) of GweGwe Beach Lodge at Mkambati Nature Reserve - Wild Coast, South Africa .
The Cape Vulture is not a pretty bird, but it is magnificent.
It is endangered and awareness of it must be created to ensure its survival.
Without vultures cleaning up animal carcasses, entire eco systems could be at risk from disease.
At Mkambathi Nature Reserve, we have a 'vulture restaurant', where carcasses of animals that have died natural deaths are placed, for them to be consumed by the vultures without them being disturbed.
The colony nests on the cliffs of the Msikaba River Gorge, which forms a border of the Mkambati Nature Reserve, in Pondoland, on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The Cape Vulture is the largest vulture species in southern Africa and the only endemic resident vulture of the region. There are 6 species of vultures in South Africa, all of which are endangered.
Sadly, it is still falsely and ignorantly believed by some cultures, who eat parts of the bird, that consuming it will give them magical powers. Education on this subject is vital to save the species.
