The whole of South Africa is behind the Ocean Mavericks 💪

With just 86 nautical miles left of their Trans-Atlantic row, the team is still holding third place, driven by grit, brotherhood and an unbreakable purpose.

They’re expected to cross the finish line at around 2pm on Saturday (SA time), conditions permitting.

Fundraising now stands at R1 684 687 a phenomenal 93% of target.

If there was ever a moment to stand behind this journey and the work of the Pondoland Conservation Trust, this is it.

One final push. One last surge of support.

A heartfelt message from Matt - straight from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean- tired, sun-burnt, but still rowing with purpose.

The crew have pushed past the half-way mark in .toughest.row and their fundraising efforts are also approaching 50% of target!

If you are able to donate, please know that every bit counts. 100% of funds raised go to The Pondoland Conservation Trust and This Day Foundation will be matching all donations through to the finish line in Antigua.

Thank you to everyone who has supported, shared, donated and believed in this mission.

Meet Siyanda, aka “Siya”. Siya joined the Wild Child Africa team in November 2024, and it didn’t take long for him to find his stride. His first trail as an assistant guide in January 2025 sparked something profound in him - a deep connection with nature that quickly grew into a passion for guiding and conservation.

For Siya, guiding the Pondo Trail is more than a just job. His favourite part of being on trail is enjoying time in nature and getting to share the rich cultural stories of Pondoland with guests. Siya says that seeing his home through the eyes of guests from around the globe has given him a new appreciation of the beauty that surrounds him every day.

Matt, our director, first met Siya at Community Trust meeting, where Siya was seamlessly translating between Xhosa and English. His quick thinking, quiet leadership, and gift for bridging worlds has made him a vital member of his community and our team.

When he looks ahead, Siya dreams of being a successful family man, full of love and wisdom to share with the next generation.

Thank you for being a valued part of our team Siya, we cannot wait to watch you continue to grow in this guiding space.

At the heart of Wild Child Africa lies a simple truth, we cannot explore these wild places without helping to protect them.

The Pondoland Conservation Trust was born from this belief. Established to preserve one of the last true wilderness frontiers of Southern Africa, the Trust supports community-led conservation and sustainable tourism along the Wild Coast.

This coastline, with its rare plant life, pristine estuaries and deeply rooted Mpondo culture, is a living treasure - but it faces growing threats from overdevelopment, poaching, and habitat loss.

Through the Trust, we’re able to give back directly to the land and the people who make our Pondo Trail™️ possible.

Because protecting Pondoland isn’t just about conserving a place, it’s about safeguarding a way of life, for generations still to come.

Meet Luke “Coolhand” Powers.

Luke is a walking definition of our motto; Be Wild, Be Free. Luke is a free spirit, an adventurer, a family man, a sensational trail runner and an even better guide.

Luke is happiest when he is getting lost in the mountains, sleeping under the stars and cooking on an open fire. He likes surfing, laughing and connecting with people. His dislikes include leaf blowers, closed minded people and queues.

Luke’s easy-going nature, great sense of humour and deep connection to the natural world around him make him the ideal companion for your Pondo Trail Adventure.

We are so stoked to have you on the team Luke!

Be Wild, Be Free

Wild Child Africa was born out of the unquenchable thirst for adventure of two brothers and their young families, a pure love of nature and the outdoors and a humble effort to live a simple, purposeful and meaningful life.

Matt is no stranger to exploration and adventure having embarked on and led many trips into and around Africa and Antarctica. His love for wildlife and conservation, combined with his knowledge and passion for Africa and particularly the Wild Coast, makes him the perfect adventure companion.

Cam, campfire cuisine extraordinaire and camp manager, is responsible for ensuring the comforts of camp life after every day’s adventure and making the magic at mealtimes. Cam’s knowledge of South Africa’s coastline, having walked the entire 3000km of it from Namibia to Mozambique, combined with her dazzling culinary and 4x4 skills, equip her as the ultimate Pondo ground crew leader where logistical challenges are met on an hourly basis.

Tim, having spent 20 years in education, eight of which as a Headmaster, and having explored the jungles of Cameroon and the glaciers of Antarctica, guided in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Kenya, and fished virtually every piece of African water south of the equator, is the perfect host to ignite your passion for Africa and entertain you with stories about some of its charms. Tim is passionate about leadership and he has lectured on this topic to various audiences over the past few years.
