A Special Heritage Bike Tour with RJ Tours 🚲

This past weekend, we had the pleasure of taking a lovely family from London on our Heritage Bike Tour around Oudtshoorn.

It was extra special for the family as they are Jewish, and one of the highlights of the day was visiting the historic Oudtshoorn Synagogue, built in the 1880s. They really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the Jewish community and the history connected to Oudtshoorn. It was wonderful to see how meaningful the visit was for them.

Of course, no bike tour is complete without a good coffee stop! ☕ We stopped at Beans About Coffee – The Mothership, where we took a little break, enjoyed some coffee and relaxed before continuing our ride.

For us at RJ Tours, it’s moments like these that make our tours so special. It’s not only about visiting places, but about connecting with the history, people and stories that make Oudtshoorn unique.

A Special Moment on Our Heritage Walk!

During the 17th Klein Karoo Klassique, RJ Tours had the pleasure of taking a wonderful group of guests on a Heritage Walk through Oudtshoorn.

While visiting one of the beautiful historic churches, one of our guests asked if they could play the organ. And what a treat it was!

We were all treated to a beautiful classical performance inside the church. It was completely unexpected, but definitely one of those moments we will remember.

Some tours stay with you long after they're over.

Today, during the 17th Klein Karoo Klassique, we explored five beautiful churches in Oudtshoorn, each with its own story to tell.

One of the most touching moments was at the Methodist Church, where a guest shared childhood memories of her mother growing up there and the stories she used to tell. It was a beautiful reminder that history lives on through people as much as through places.

At St Saviour's Cathedral, Carol welcomed us by ringing the church bell and sharing the story of the Polish Black Madonna in the Crypt—a truly special moment. We also visited St Jude's Anglican Church, where guests admired the beautiful Ladies' Chapel, designed by the renowned Sophy Gray and ended our walk at the Presbyterian Church, where we admired its beautiful interior.

What a beautiful afternoon in the Klein Karoo!

Yesterday we had the absolute pleasure of spending the afternoon with wonderful guests from Belgium and the Netherlands as we explored the rich history and culture of Oudtshoorn on one of our Heritage Walks.

Our adventure started at the historic St Jude's Anglican Church, which has stood proudly since the 1860s. One of the highlights of the day was when one of our guests had the unique opportunity to play the church's magnificent organ—a truly special moment and a real treat for everyone on the tour.

From there, we wandered through Oudtshoorn's historic streets, sharing stories of the famous Ostrich Feather Boom, admiring our magnificent sandstone buildings and elegant Ostrich Feather Palaces, and discovering why Oudtshoorn became known as "Little Jerusalem of Africa."

As the sun began to set, we made our final stop at the historic Suspension Bridge. Standing together, looking out over the breathtaking Swartberg Mountain Range as the warm colours of the Klein Karoo sunset filled the sky, was the perfect way to end a wonderful afternoon. Sometimes it's those quiet moments that become the best memories.

Sometimes the best travel memories are the unexpected ones!

We had the pleasure of welcoming a wonderful mother and daughter who were on a road trip through the beautiful Klein Karoo and decided to make a stop in Oudtshoorn. While exploring town, they were fascinated by our stunning historic sandstone buildings and wanted to learn more about the rich history that makes Oudtshoorn so special.

Their journey became even more special with a stop at Beans About Coffee, where they were lucky enough to experience the coffee roasting process firsthand and discover how those amazing coffee beans are carefully roasted to create the perfect cup.

What an incredible day with amazing tourism professionals from across South Africa!

Amazing day spent sharing the stories of Oudtshoorn with incredible tour operators visiting from Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg!

RJ Tours had the pleasure of taking the group on one of our special Heritage Walks, where we explored the history and hidden gems that make our town so unique.

One of the highlights of the day was our visit to Le Roux Town House, where the group had a very special surprise meeting with a Professor from America, who shared fascinating insights about the Boomplaas Project and its importance in understanding the rich history of our region. What a special moment to connect history, culture, and learning all in one place.

To end off the experience, we stopped at Beans About Coffee in High Street ☕, where everyone got to learn about coffee beans, the roasting process, and what goes into creating that perfect cup of coffee.

What an inspiring day!

RJ Tours was honoured to be part of the Career Club programme for De Villiers Primary School with the Grade 7 learners.

We had the opportunity to share how tourism adds value to South Africa and Oudtshoorn by creating jobs, preserving heritage, and supporting local communities.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the learners bravely write down their dream careers and place them on a wall for everyone to see. Their confidence, ambition, and excitement for the future were truly inspiring.

From Belgium to the Heart of the Karoo!
It was such a pleasure hosting a tour operator from Belgium on his very first trip to South Africa! We made sure his introduction to Oudtshoorn was one for the books.

RJ Tours kept the energy high with a packed itinerary of history and adrenaline:

Cango Caves Adventure: We kicked things off with the famous adventure tour, navigating the hidden chambers and narrow passages of these ancient limestone wonders.

Heritage Walking Tour: Since we still had time to spare before our next stop, we squeezed in a Heritage Walk. It was the perfect way to share the "untold stories" of our town and the historic ostrich feather boom.

Safari Ostrich Farm: We wrapped up the day at the farm, getting up close and personal with the world's largest birds.

A Heartwarming Heritage Journey with RJ Tours!
We recently had the absolute pleasure of hosting a wonderful family all the way from Belgium for a truly special local tour right here in Oudtshoorn.

Our guests had a heartfelt request: they wanted to connect with the local community and visit a school to meet some of our younger children. At RJ Tours, we love creating these meaningful, human connections, so we curated a day centered around education and heritage.

Highlights of the Day:
Nomonde Creche: We started the morning with big smiles and even bigger energy at Nomonde Creche. The family loved interacting with the little ones, seeing where our community’s journey begins.

It was a privilege to take them on a journey through the heart of our community:

De Villiers Primary School was the next stop: We then visited this historic gem, which is one of Oudtshoorn’s oldest schools.

Living History: Our guests were fascinated to learn that this school actually started as a Teacher’s Training College!
