During the June holidays the Grade 3 and 4 children from across our Education Centres went on an outing to a wonderful wetland and bird sanctuary called Intaka Island. This unique example of nature conservation and urban development co-existing in harmony is quite an inspiration, especially that over 20 years later it is still thriving. Kobus du Toit from ‘City as a Classroom’ organised and facilitated the outing. He seeks out spaces and places around Cape Town which will inspire children. He truly believes these learning spaces are more effective, and he was so right.

Every child left that day being able to identify Wild Sour Fig or describe a cormorants’ nest or explain the process of collecting rainwater. I doubt that this information would have sunk in quite as effectively by just sitting in a classroom!
