See the African bush from a completely different perspective. 🐎🌅

Horseback safaris are available right here on the private property where Wildlife Adventure Africa is based - giving riders the opportunity to experience the bush without the doors, windows or engine of a safari vehicle.

Ride through the reserve and experience the possibility of encountering species such as giraffe, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, kudu, nyala, impala, sable and waterbuck from horseback. 🦒🦓

The horseback experiences are operated by Horse Adventure Africa and are available as an optional activity for Wildlife Adventure Africa participants - but you don’t need to be joining our veterinary program to book.

A snare can be nothing more than a piece of wire - but around a wild animal, it can become a fight for survival.

This giraffe required veterinary intervention after being caught in a snare. Once safely immobilised, the team was able to work quickly while our participants assisted alongside the wildlife professionals throughout the procedure.

Working with an immobilised giraffe is an enormous team effort. From positioning and monitoring to assisting the veterinary team and keeping the animal safe throughout the procedure, every person has a role.

Cases like this also show the reality behind wildlife veterinary medicine. It isn’t always the exciting capture you see in a photograph. Sometimes an animal is on the ground because human activity has put its life at risk - and there is a limited window to help.

For our participants, being part of these cases provides an extraordinary opportunity to learn while contributing to genuine wildlife conservation work.

And once the work is finished, there is only one outcome everyone wants to see: the animal back on its feet and back in the wild. 🦒🤎

Because a trip to South Africa should include a few moments where you just stop and take it all in. 🇿🇦⛰️

Between days spent working alongside wildlife veterinarians, our participants also get the opportunity to explore some of the incredible places surrounding us.

One of them: the Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon, including this iconic view of the Three Rondavels.

It’s a chance to swap veterinary gear for hiking shoes, spend the day exploring with the group and see a completely different side of the Lowveld.

The veterinary experiences may be what initially brings many of our participants to South Africa - but it’s often the combination of the wildlife, adventures, landscapes, friendships and completely unexpected moments that makes leaving so difficult.

This is what hands-on really looks like. 💉🩺

Our participants don’t simply stand back and observe. Under the direction and supervision of experienced wildlife veterinarians, they have the opportunity to get involved in real procedures - from preparing medications and injections to assisting with treatment, monitoring and handling wildlife safely in the field.

Every case is different. Every animal presents a new challenge. And every procedure becomes an opportunity to learn skills that simply cannot be replicated in a classroom.

For veterinary students, pre-vet students, vet nurses, graduates and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world, these are the moments that make our 14-Day Wildlife Veterinary Program something completely different.

There’s a big difference between learning about wildlife medicine and standing in the field while it’s happening. 🩺🌿

During this sable operation, participants joined the team in the field and gained exposure to the different stages involved in safely working with immobilised wildlife.

From taking measurements and recording information to assisting around the animal and observing veterinary examinations - every procedure becomes an opportunity to understand just how much planning, teamwork and attention goes into wildlife veterinary work.

And that portable ultrasound in the middle of the bush? That’s wildlife medicine. No clinic walls required.

Our participants aren’t coming to South Africa simply to watch from a distance. Where appropriate, they are given the opportunity to get involved under the direction and supervision of the veterinary team, with the level of participation depending on the procedure and each participant’s experience.

No two weeks are identical because the veterinary work is real - and the cases we assist with depend on what is actually happening with wildlife in our area at the time.

That unpredictability is part of what makes it so special.
