Remarkable story

Last year November our agents in Plettenberg Bay received word of a young male elephant seal high up in the Salt River near Natures Valley. Armed with stranding equipment and tags, Frikkie van der Vyver and Danielle Conry hiked out to the isolated spot where they found him lazing on the lush green banks of a quiet backwater pool. They decided to call him Salty. After many hours of silent stalking attempts while Dani distracted him, Frikkie managed to give him one flipper tag. They returned to this beautiful but very unlikely seal haulout two weeks later to give him his second piece of jewelry. As Salty had just completed his annual moult, no one expected to see him again. It wasn't until last month when a message from Sean Evans, a biologist who had recently returned from Marion Island, came about a foreign elephant seal that he had encountered there in March this year... After looking at Sean's photo's we were able to match the tag colour code and number, and concluded that amazingly it was the same animal, some 2000 km away, but this time with his friends and in a much more appropriate spot for ellies. We are glad to see that Salty had survived. This resight shows the value of tagging ellie seals that find their way to the South African coastline, and indicates that despite being vagrant visitors here they do survive, and that they can return to their area of origin. Frikkie and Dani will shortly undergo a southward migration themselves, as part of the Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme, where they hope to meet up with Salty.
