not one, not two… 13 southern right whales in the bay this morning 🤩
these videos show a mating pod of 5 on our 8:30 trip 🤭

One of the reasons for their migration is mating in warmer waters. For us 13 degrees might still be cold but definitely warmer that at the southern pole 😅 perfect for Southern rights on their honeymoon 🫣

✨The Gentle Giant ✨ that’s what the Southern Right Whale is known as. These beautiful beings have given us amazing sightings this past week. With their soft nature and the breathtaking size they really live up to their name.

In whale season the main reason they visit Plettenberg Bay is mating and calving. The robberg peninsula’s protection from the open Indian Ocean gives the perfect conditions for a young calf to learn its first movements as well as for mature whales to mate. This is also the reason why most of the time we will find these Southern Rights very close to the coastline. 🏖️

Here are five giant facts for you:
1. They can weight up the weight of 11 african elephants (60t)
2. Their callosities become bigger with age but will always be the same pattern that works like a fingerprint
3. A calf will grow up to 3cm per day, in their first year they double in size
4. At the southern pole during summer one whale can eat up to 1,600kg food per day; during their migration they often don’t eat at all
5. The oldest Southern Right Whale recorded was 131 years old

This curious humpback whale did not want us to go home without a sighting 🤩

After a few days with east wind we were struggling to find good sightings over the weekend… On time for the start of the week this humpback whale rewarded us for our patience with the most beautiful sighting 🤭

It was so relaxed and circled the boat multiple times 🩷 so magical for the people on board.

✨Sabrina is back in the water✨

Finally after such a long time our 47 seater Sabrina is back out in the ocean… to celebrate we encountered 6 humpback whales off natures valley🤩

These juveniles were giving all to give our clients a big smile on their faces 🤭
