Wednesday 14th of October… The other side of mother nature’s wonders of the ocean 🫣

Two Orcas came into our bay early in the morning and tried to live up to the name “killer whale”

Over the last two months we have been so lucky with our Southern Right mothers and calves along our coastline. We’ve seen the calves from their first day on earth every day and watched them grow, getting ready to go back to the southern pole🫶🏼
One calf however was still a bit smaller than the rest…

For 4,5 hours these two orcas tried to catch the calf and seperate it from its mother. During that time, humpback dolphins and other adult southern rights tried to help the mother and in the end it was all worth the fight.
the Orcas got tired and later that night they eventually left the bay 🥳

Hopefully they will only make their way back here when the whales are gone as even though mother nature can look cruel on first sight, the killer whales are also just a predator like the lion and the leopard…. and who would not like to see those in the wild? 🤩✨

being able to operate whale watching here in Plett comes with a few rules… after all the ocean is their home and we are just friendly visitors :)

As a member of the general public you are to stay at least 300 meter away from a whale, whereas with our permit we can approach them up to 50 meters in a very slow speed. After that it is the whales choice to come closer or to show us with its body language if it is fine with the boats presence or not🫣

I guess you could say we have proved to them that our boats are no threats but rather a group of amazed and happy people that are here to feel their magic 🩷✨

For the past two months now, these southern right whales have been sitting along Keurbooms beach and slowly became more and more inquisitive towards us.

Hopefully they are still here for a little while longer before starting their journey back to the southern pole 😭

The days are finally longer than the nights again so before our whales season comes to an end we want to make sure everyone can witness these amazing creatures along our coastline.

Even if that means being the first ones on the beach and launching the boat right into the first light at 6:30 🤭🫣

Adventures like this are truly magical so why not give it a magical setting 🌞🌅

not one, not two… 13 southern right whales in the bay this morning 🤩
these videos show a mating pod of 5 on our 8:30 trip 🤭

One of the reasons for their migration is mating in warmer waters. For us 13 degrees might still be cold but definitely warmer that at the southern pole 😅 perfect for Southern rights on their honeymoon 🫣

✨The Gentle Giant ✨ that’s what the Southern Right Whale is known as. These beautiful beings have given us amazing sightings this past week. With their soft nature and the breathtaking size they really live up to their name.

In whale season the main reason they visit Plettenberg Bay is mating and calving. The robberg peninsula’s protection from the open Indian Ocean gives the perfect conditions for a young calf to learn its first movements as well as for mature whales to mate. This is also the reason why most of the time we will find these Southern Rights very close to the coastline. 🏖️

Here are five giant facts for you:
1. They can weight up the weight of 11 african elephants (60t)
2. Their callosities become bigger with age but will always be the same pattern that works like a fingerprint
3. A calf will grow up to 3cm per day, in their first year they double in size
4. At the southern pole during summer one whale can eat up to 1,600kg food per day; during their migration they often don’t eat at all
5. The oldest Southern Right Whale recorded was 131 years old
