Plettenberg Bay's Robberg Nature Reserve is more than just a beautiful walk. It's a national monument, a World Heritage Site, and a true geological and historical gem. If you're planning a trip to Plett, you have to add this to your must-see list!

Here are a few things you might not know about this incredible place:

Ancient History: Robberg's Nelson Bay Caves are part of the Cradle of Human Culture, with evidence of human occupation dating back 120,000 years.

A Moving Dune: The Witsand Dune is one of only seven "climbing-falling" dunes in the Western Cape. It's an 80-meter-tall mountain of sand constantly being shaped by the wind.

Whale Rock's Secret: On a clear day, you can spot the wreckage of the Athina, a Greek trawler that sank in 1967, just off Robberg Point.

Winter Wonders: During winter, keep an eye out for rare seabirds that migrate from Sub-Antarctic islands, like the shy albatross and Subantarctic skua.

Ready to explore Robberg and all that Plett has to offer? Our guest apartment is the perfect base for your next adventure.

Steeped in history and natural beauty, Plettenberg Bay is more than just a beach paradise!

Did you know this coastal gem has a fascinating past?

The area has been inhabited for centuries, with evidence of early Stone Age human presence dating back over 120,000 years! The Khoisan people were the first inhabitants, leaving a rich cultural legacy.
Plett was a busy port of call for early European seafarers. In 1778, the first governor of the Cape, Joachim van Plettenberg, named the bay "Bahia Formosa" (beautiful bay), which later became Plettenberg Bay.
The bay's natural harbour made it an ideal location for the timber industry in the 1800s. The forests of the Tsitsikamma provided valuable wood, and a small settlement grew to support the trade.
Plett was also a key whaling station in the early 20th century. While this part of the history is a stark reminder of the past, it’s a crucial part of the town’s story.
Since the mid-1900s, Plettenberg Bay has transformed into a world-renowned tourist destination, famous for its golden beaches, marine life, and outdoor adventures.

From ancient inhabitants to seafarers and adventurers, Plett's history is as captivating as its landscapes. The next time you're here, take a moment to appreciate the stories held within this beautiful bay!

✨ Discover the Magic of Plettenberg Bay ✨

When you visit Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, or Noetzie, keep your eyes on the sand… because hidden along our pristine beaches lies one of the Garden Route’s most enchanting treasures — the elusive Pansy Shell

These delicate shells, also known as Sand Dollars, are beloved by beach walkers and nature lovers. So rare and special, they’ve even become the emblem of Plettenberg Bay itself!

Legend says they are coins lost by mermaids or the people of Atlantis, while others see them as symbols of peace and goodwill — thanks to the five tiny “doves” hidden inside. No matter which story you believe, stumbling upon one of these beauties feels like finding pure magic.

Tips for spotting them:

Go beachcombing just after high tide.

The earlier the better — set your alarm if you’re staying near the shore.

Walk slowly, keep your eyes low, and let the ocean surprise you.

Best of all? When you stay in a beachfront property here in Plett, you’re perfectly placed for pansy shell hunting mornings, peaceful beach walks, and unforgettable sunsets right on your doorstep.

Whether it’s the golden sands of Keurbooms, Plett’s main beach, or the dramatic shores of Knysna and Noetzie — every day is an adventure waiting to happen.

Book your stay with us and experience the wonder of Plettenberg Bay — where the ocean gifts you treasures if you know where (and when!) to look.
