Lambda (uppercase Λ, lowercase λ) is the 11th letter of the Greek alphabet. The Greek letter lambda was selected as a symbol by the Gay Activists Alliance of New York in 1970. In December 1974, the lambda was officially declared the international symbol for gay and le***an rights by the International Gay Rights Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland. The lambda signifies unity under oppression. The gay r

ights organization Lambda Legal and the American Lambda Literary Award derive their names from this symbol. The lambda was associated with the Spartans (Lambda was used as a shield pattern by the Spartan Army) because they were also known as the Lacedaemonians, from the Ancient Greek Λακεδαίμων, which begins with the letter lambda. PETROL PUMP ATTENDANTS

There is no self service at petrol (gas) stations in South Africa. A petrol pump attendant will fill your tank, and clean your windows, check your oil and water, and make sure your tires have the right pressure.

It's customary to tip your petrol pump attendant.

CAR GUARDS

Car Guards are informally employed to look after your vehicle once you park it in a public place, in addition, they'll direct you in and out of your parking spot. It's customary to give them a tip.

South African motorists have hailed car guards around the country, saying that without their frantic curbside whistling and inarticulate yelling, parking would be entirely impossible. “They don’t have drivers’ licenses but they’ve got mad skills,” said one driver. “Thank heavens for their uncanny ability to see loading zones and to assure us that they’re legit spaces.

BRAAI

The word braaivleis is Afrikaans for “roasted meat.”

The word braai (pronounced “bry”, rhyming with the word “cry”; plural braais) is Afrikaans for “barbecue” or “roast” and is a social custom in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. It originated with the Afrikaner people, but has since been adopted by South Africans of many ethnic backgrounds. The word vleis is Afrikaans for “meat”.

The word has been adopted by English-speaking South Africans and can be regarded as another word for barbecue, in that it serves as a verb when describing how food is cooked and a noun when describing the cooking equipment, such as a grill. The traditions around a braai can be considerably different from a barbecue, however, even if the method of food preparation is very similar.

RHINOCEROS

Both black and white rhinoceroses are actually gray. They are different not in color but in lip shape. The black rhino has a pointed upper lip, while its white relative has a squared lip. The difference in lip shape is related to the animals' diets. Black rhinos are browsers that get most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes. They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the branches. White rhinos graze on grasses, walking with their enormous heads and squared lips lowered to the ground.

White rhinos live on Africa's grassy plains, where they sometimes gather in groups of as many as a dozen individuals. Females reproduce only every two and a half to five years. Their single calf does not live on its own until it is about three years old.

Under the hot African sun, white rhinos take cover by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sunblock.

Leopards are graceful and powerful big cats closely related to lions, tigers, and jaguars. They live in sub-Saharan Africa, northeast Africa, Central Asia, India, and China. However, many of their populations are endangered, especially outside of Africa.

The leopard is so strong and comfortable in trees that it often hauls its kills into the branches. By dragging the bodies of large animals aloft it hopes to keep them safe from scavengers such as hyenas. Leopards can also hunt from trees, where their spotted coats allow them to blend with the leaves until they spring with a deadly pounce. These nocturnal predators also stalk antelope, deer, and pigs by stealthy movements in the tall grass. When human settlements are present, leopards often attack dogs and, occasionally, people.

Leopards are strong swimmers and very much at home in the water, where they sometimes eat fish or crabs.
