Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua, a pea farmer, spent years driving for hours at a time to deliver water to wild animals in Tsavo West National Park during severe droughts. He began after seeing how badly the changing climate was affecting the area.

Rainfall became far less reliable, and he believed that without help, many animals would die. Elephants, buffalo, antelope, and zebras learned the sound of his truck. When they heard it, they came running. One day he found hundreds of buffalo waiting at a dry water hole.

Some people told him to let nature take its course. He said this was not just about nature. It was about climate change.

In June 2024, Mwalua died at age 51 after years of kidney failure. His wife, Rachel, continues his work. The Mwalua Wildlife Trust he founded still brings sustainable water solutions to wildlife.

One man saw suffering and chose to act.

That is a legacy worth remembering.
